Responsibilities

  • Operate one or multiple furnaces to melt aluminum ingot and scrap for die-cast operations.
  • Regulate temperatures and charge furnaces with correct mix; verify melt quality.
  • Deliver and distribute molten metal to die-cast machines in precise amounts and proportions; maintain a timed melt temperature.
  • Inspect refractory lining and distribution ladles for cracks/defects; support repair activities as directed.
  • Perform material handling tasks, including lift-truck operation.
  • Set up die-cast cells when required: ladle systems, auto-spray, robotics, trim presses; replace dies and adjust equipment.
  • Uphold safety of others when filling ladles, operating lift trucks, and pouring metal during setup.
  • Provide relief coverage for the primary Furnace Tender.

Role Snapshot
  • Location: Onsite, union role at Gardner Denver Thomas - 1419 Illinois Ave., Sheboygan, WI 53081
  • Schedule: 3rd Shift, Monday-Friday (11:00 pm-7:00 am)
  • Purpose: Operate, inspect, and clean furnaces; coordinate melt logistics; and set up die-cast machines as needed to support production continuity.
Key Responsibilities
  • Run one or multiple furnaces to melt aluminum ingot and scrap for die-cast operations.
  • Regulate temperatures; charge furnaces with the correct mix; verify melt quality per instructions.
  • Deliver and distribute molten metal to die-cast machines in precise amounts and proportions; maintain a timed schedule to hold central melt temperature.
  • Assist with furnace cool-down; inspect refractory lining and distribution ladles for cracks/defects; support repair activities as directed.
  • Perform material handling tasks, including lift-truck operation.
  • Set up die-cast cells when required: ladle systems, auto-spray, robotics, and trim presses; remove/replace dies and adjust equipment.
  • Uphold safety of others when filling ladles, operating lift trucks, and pouring metal into furnaces during machine setup.
  • Provide relief coverage for the primary Furnace Tender.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED (technical diploma preferred).
  • 1+ years of forklift experience with a valid license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1+ years of hands-on furnace operations knowledge: cleaning, operation, maintenance.
  • Ability to follow written/verbal instructions under general supervision; seeks guidance on unusual procedures or irregularities.
  • Die-cast environment experience required prior to hiring or appointment to the role.
Physical & Environmental Conditions
  • Exposure to heat, dirt, grease, and fumes; noise may exceed 85 dB (hearing protection required above 85 dB).
  • Lifting/pushing/pulling/carrying: 5 lbs constantly, 35 lbs frequently, 75 lbs occasionally.
  • Frequent: sitting, standing, kneeling, climbing, bending, stooping.
  • Typical equipment: lift trucks (power/hand), shovels, furnace-cleaning tools, skimming/fluxing tools, hand tools, hoists, and required PPE.
  • Hazards include serious cuts, burns, bruises, and potential permanent injury; goggles and heavy gloves are required - safe practices minimize risk.
