Job summary

The City of Florence, Alabama is seeking a Cemetery Supervisor to manage cemetery properties, oversee maintenance crews, and supervise trades for multiple locations. The role involves coordinating burials, grave maintenance, equipment repair, and budget administration under the Mayor's direction.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, strong supervisory experience, and a valid Alabama pesticide application permit or ability to obtain within a year.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED or equivalent training in small engine repair, automotive repair, and welding.
• A minimum of six (6) years of training or experience in the field.
• Two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred; minimum eighteen (18) months required.
• Must have valid Category 3 (Ornamental and Turf Pest Control) Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Commercial Applicator permit or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
• Excellent attendance and safety records required.
• A valid driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

• Makes arrangements for funerals.
• Fills in sunken graves and straightens sagged tombstones.
• Coordinates and supervises cemetery maintenance (grass, trees, pruning, leaves).
• Supervises debris cleanup after storms.
• Repairs and services equipment and vehicles (gasoline engines, diesel engines, hydraulic systems).
• Fabricates repairs with MIG, stick, and gas welding.
• Prepares daily time sheets and reports.
• Evaluates personnel performance and yearly evaluations.
• Interviews, hires, and disciplines department employees.
• Prepares and administers department budget.
• Opens and closes grave sites; disinterment of bodies.
• Coordinates collection of parking meter money.
• Assists public with genealogy research and property deeds/boundaries.
• Oversees pre-emergent herbicide applications and yearly upgrade plans.
