Job summary

Virginia Paving Company is seeking a CDL Truck Driver for a night shift with paid differential. This hourly position involves safely operating a CDL truck to transport materials to designated locations and adhering to FMCSA regulations.

A High school diploma or GED and at least one year of CDL driving experience are preferred. The role may include pre/post-shift safety checks, load securement, and clear communication with Dispatch.

General Description

A CDL Truck Driver is an hourly‑rated skilled craft position that, for the majority of the time, is responsible for the safe operation of a CDL Truck, to transport materials to/from identified pick‑up and drop‑off locations.

Key Duties
  • Hold valid Class "A" or "B" CDL license and personal driving record within company MVR policy.
  • Drive Tri‑Axle Truck, hauling Trailer, to transport materials to/from assigned locations.
  • Procure and maintain approved medical examiner’s certificate (FMCSR part 391.41) for the duration of employment, in accordance with Class "A" CDL License requirements.
  • Operate CMV Dump Truck safely and efficiently on public and private roadways.
  • Maintain familiarity with applicable FMCSA and USDOT safety and operation regulations.
  • Visually assess material in the dump and securely reposition or adjust contents to ensure a secured load for safe transport.
  • Inspect mechanical, safety and operational components for defects, completing Pre/Post trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
  • Monitor vehicle indicators for fluid levels (oil, water, fuel) during operation.
  • Perform pre/post‑shift safety checks of fluid levels, leaks and vehicle damage.
  • Notify supervisor if the vehicle requires repair.
  • Communicate verbally with Dispatch and/or Supervisor regularly.
  • Interpret and follow dispatched routing/maps for pickups and deliveries.
  • Work day or night shifts as required.
  • Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year CDL driving experience is required.
Physical Demands
  • Frequent sitting and driving of a Commercial Motor Vehicle; using hands, arms and legs/feet to maneuver and control the vehicle via steering wheel, turn signal, horn, foot pedals and other controls.
  • Periodic standing and walking on hard, level surfaces to conduct visual assessments of material loads, drop‑off areas and vehicle inspections.
  • Step up/down approximately 2 ft, using access steps and three points of contact to access/egress the vehicle cab, periodically throughout the day.
  • Frequent use of hands to operate tarp control (electric or manual).
  • Vision: close, distance, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing: ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds such as alarms and instructions.
  • Infrequent lifting or turning of up to 25 lbs, including opening the Dump Truck Hood and opening/closing the Tail Gate.
Work Environment
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Periodic exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of construction projects.
  • Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Possible exposure to substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and asphalt.

  • Assess the work environment for hazards and ensure training is adequate.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment and use it appropriately.
  • Speak up when seeing an unsafe act.
  • Report near‑miss incidents.
  • Seek assistance when needed to perform tasks safely.
