Summary of Job

Transit Bus Drivers are frontline representatives of Central Transportation, the fixed-route public transit system serving the Stevens Point area. In this role, drivers operate transit system vehicles under supervision, transporting passengers along designated scheduled routes or on-demand services. Drivers are responsible for adhering to all driving and vehicle safety regulations while ensuring the safe, reliable, and professional operation of transit buses.

In addition to safe vehicle operation, drivers provide courteous, responsive, and friendly customer service to passengers.

As a Central Transportation Bus Driver, you are part of a dedicated team committed to delivering essential mobility services to the community. Central Transportation provides both fixed-route and paratransit services throughout the City of Stevens Point and the Villages of Whiting and Plover.

Tasks Routinely Performed
  • Safely operate a transit vehicle to transport passengers.
  • Safely navigates the vehicle through traffic along assigned routes, under various environmental conditions, in accordance with traffic laws and departmental regulations.
  • Must be able to perform all duties regardless of weather, traffic conditions and passenger load conditions.
  • Adhere to adopted routes, schedules and operating policies and procedures.
  • Safely operates all accessibility devices (i.e., ramps, lifts, etc.) according to Authority and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Uses vehicle's intercom system to communicate instructions to passengers and to call out vehicle stops and transfer points.
  • Counts passengers, accounts for and turn in collected fares daily.
  • Responds to passenger inquiries, ensures orderliness on vehicles, and demonstrates authority and discretion in maintaining passenger safety.
  • Operates a two-way radio to maintain contact with dispatcher.
  • Maintains records, logs, and prepares reports.
  • Completes accident, incident, and injury reports.
  • Make daily and periodic checks of vehicles to maintain safe operating conditions.
  • Performs basic operational maintenance.
  • Advises supervisor and mechanic of necessary repairs.
  • Cleans the interior and washes the exteriors of the vehicle daily.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum age requirement of 21 years and a safe driving record.
  • Possess a valid State of Wisconsin Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License or a valid State of Wisconsin Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with the following three endorsements: KNOWLEDGE, PASSENGER and AIR BRAKES.
  • Paid training is provided for candidates with CLPs to help obtain their license.
  • Must successfully pass all job-related tests, including a pre‑employment physical exam.
Working Conditions And Physical Requirements
  • Physically capable of operating any vehicle assigned to the employee in the fleet and proficient in operating all mobility equipment, including wheelchair lifts, located on or within the vehicle.
  • Must be able to assist passengers to and from vehicle.
  • Must be able to get in and out of vehicle.
  • Must be able to maneuver wheelchairs for the purpose of loading, securing, and off‑loading a lift‑equipped vehicle.
  • Capability to stoop, kneel, bend, lift, and pull heavy objects for routine and emergency tasks.
  • Occasionally lift equipment weighing up to twenty (20) pounds.
Essential Knowledge & Skills
  • Proficient knowledge of Wisconsin Traffic Laws.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and responsibly.
  • Capacity to interact appropriately and courteously with patrons, ensuring effective passenger and public relations.
  • Skill in identifying and reporting vehicle mechanical defects.
  • Capability to adhere to established routes and schedules.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, split shifts, weekends, and overtime as needed.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in reading maps and schedules.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow policies and procedures outlined in agency bulletins and written instructions, and to respond to official inquiries.
  • Aptitude for completing routine reports and records.
  • Capacity to oversee fare collection and the use of passes or transfers.
