Job summary

Qualdoc in Minneapolis, MN is seeking a Class A CDL Driver/Operator for derailment response and railroad operations. You will transport and operate heavy equipment, perform pre/post-trip inspections, and support rerailing and track maintenance tasks.

The role requires 24/7 availability, willingness to work overtime, and safety‑driven performance. Starting pay is $26.00 per hour with higher rates based on experience; full benefits are provided.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL‑A).
  • Experience in construction labor or similar heavy‑equipment environment.
  • Ability to pass drug screening, background check and safety training.
  • 24/7 availability for emergency response, including weekends/holidays.
  • Comfortable working around cranes and other heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections on trucks and equipment.
  • Drive tractor‑trailers to job sites and inspect loads.
  • Verify permits and overweight/oversize specifications.
  • Assist with derailment operations, load transfers, and track maintenance.
  • Operate cranes, backhoes, and other equipment when qualified.
  • Follow safety policies and maintain readiness of vehicles and gear.

CDL-A Driver/Operator – Rerail

Location: Minneapolis, MN
Job Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Starting Pay: $26.00/hour (Higher pay available depending on experience)
Benefits: Full-time position with benefits

Position Overview

We are seeking experienced Class A CDL drivers for a hands‑on position supporting train derailment response and railroad‑related operations.

This role involves the safe transportation and operation of equipment and materials, along with assisting with rerailing operations, railroad car maintenance and repair, load adjustments/transfers, and track maintenance, repair, and construction.

The ideal candidate is safety‑focused, dependable, physically capable, and comfortable working in an emergency‑response environment.

Schedule & Compensation
  • 40 hours guaranteed per week
  • Significant overtime; combined regular and overtime hours average 60+ hours per week
  • 24/7 on‑call availability to respond to emergencies, including weekends and holidays
  • Hours outside of Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM are paid at time‑and‑a‑half
  • Per diem available
  • Hotel pay/accommodations for required travel
  • Layover pay when applicable
Job Duties
  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of trucks, trailers, and equipment in accordance with DOT regulations and safety requirements.
  • Drive tractor‑trailers to and from job sites and inspect loads and machinery being transported.
  • Verify transportation permits and ensure overweight and oversize load/equipment specifications are accurate.
  • Participate in daily work planning and safety briefings to promote safe and efficient operations.
  • Move, stage, load, and unload materials and equipment for rerailing, load adjustment/transfer, track maintenance, repair, and new construction.
  • Assist with the assembly, inspection, and operation of cranes and other equipment.
  • Assist with rigging and connecting chains, cables, and winches during derailment operations.
  • Operate equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures while following all safety rules and regulations.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as cranes, backhoes, grapple trucks, dump trucks, excavators, and other equipment when qualified.
  • Perform tasks related to specialty lifting, rerailing, load transfers, track maintenance/repair, grading, railroad construction, and related activities.
  • Work with hydraulic tools, welding equipment, cutting torches, electrical tools, and common hand tools.
  • Continuously monitor vehicles and equipment to maintain operational readiness and minimize downtime.
  • Perform and document minor service and maintenance on equipment and vehicles and report more complex mechanical issues for repair.
  • Assist with the disassembly and loading of cranes and other equipment at the completion of assignments.
  • Restock vehicles and equipment with necessary parts, components, and supplies.
  • Sort scrap materials and place them in designated areas.
  • Participate in site cleanup and ensure all equipment and materials are properly secured for transportation.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
  • Follow all required safety policies and procedures.
  • Be flexible and willing to perform additional tasks as needed to support business operations.
Requirements
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL‑A) with a good driving record.
  • Experience in construction labor or a similar role involving physical labor.
  • Ability to pass required qualification tests, training, and safety programs.
  • 24/7 availability to respond to emergency service calls, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to safely work around heavy equipment, vehicles, tools, and railroad‑related operations.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • 3+ years of experience operating heavy equipment, including:
    • Backhoe
    • Bulldozer
    • Excavator
    • Front‑end loader
    • Grapple truck
    • Rail‑bound equipment
    • Tractor
    • Skid‑steer loader
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
