Job summary

Smithfield Foods is offering a CDL training program for aspiring drivers in our Iowa operations. Trainees will complete a 5-7 week program, learn safe driving practices, and gain experience delivering feed and loading/unloading with animal welfare as the top priority.

You must be at least 21, have a valid Class A CDL or permit, and a clean driving record. A DOT medical card will be required after hire.

• Previous driving experience preferred.

• Acceptable driving record.
• Ability to obtain a DOT medical card upon hire.

Your Opportunity

Up to $21.75/hr during the training period. CDL training program for drivers with a CDL class A permit, or CDL class A license with less than 1 year of commercial driving experience.

Core Responsibilities

• Successfully complete a 5-7 week training program.
• Follow required and recommended safety procedures while driving, delivering feed or loading and unloading with animal welfare as the foremost concern.
• Comply with all DOT rules and regulations.
• Report all accidents promptly through proper authorities.
• Comply with all rules set forth by the receiving agent.

• Must be able to work a flexible schedule (nights, weekends, and holidays).

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
• Hook up trailer to tractor, including backing under the trailer, raising landing gear and hooking up airlines.
• Roll up and down landing gear requiring use of hands and upper torso.
• Operate a manual transmission tractor.
• During pre-trip, be able to access engine area and perform checks as needed.
• Open and close trailer gates and doors to load and unload animals.
• Enter and exit the cab in tight locations such as fuel islands.
• Move upper torso when backing to check blind spots and mirrors.
• Report problems encountered on the farm or designated plant through the appropriate reporting system.
• Read and understand the emergency notification process and know whom to contact in case of an emergency.
