A research opportunity is available in the Epidemiology and Laboratory Workforce Branch (ELWB) in the Division of Workforce Development (DWD), Public Health Infrastructure Center (PHIC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC protects America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts important science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

Operating within the nation’s lead health protection agency, DWD focuses on advancing the public health workforce through evidence-based programs and strong partnerships. The selected candidate will specifically be training in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), ELWB's globally recognized, applied epidemiology fellowship program that trains elite "Disease Detectives" to protect communities and respond to public health emergencies.

Research Project

You will be a fellow on the EIS Fellowship and Response Support Team (FRST), under the mentorship of the Team Lead.

This hands-on experience offers the unique opportunity to make a substantial impact on public health workforce development while enhancing your technical and practical (problem-solving, communication, collaboration) skills. You will receive training in science and operations, database management, communication and facilitation, partnership building, and analysis and evaluation methods while collaborating in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Specific focus areas can be adapted to fit the your experience, education, and career development interests. By the end of the fellowship, the you should be able to:

• Demonstrate effective teamwork and collaboration by leveraging others’ skillsets.
• Demonstrate effective time management and how to appropriately plan one’s research according to project timelines and resources and monitor progress to completion.

ORISE Information

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received or is pursuing a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
