Position Summary

Works within the scope of Pharmacy Practice Law under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. Provides exceptional healthcare experiences by accurately following the standard operating procedures (SOP) for all aspects of medication delivery, storage, IV preparation, USP 797 and USP 800 compliance, and utilization of all pharmacy automation systems. Within their scope of licensure, communicates with integrity and courtesy through phone or in person with all disciplines reporting patient needs.

Standard Work Duties: Cancer Center Chemotherapy IV Technician
  • Utilizing strict aseptic technique, prepares chemotherapy >50-60% of infusions prepared, investigational chemotherapy, IV piggybacks, large volume IV fluids, and batch preparation of sterile products. Places appropriate made/expiration dates on all labels and maintains batch preparation records.
  • Follows SOP regarding cleaning functions, cleaning records, documentation of air pressure, and proper maintenance of anteroom and cleanrooms to assure proper performance and sterility, as well as USP 797 and 800 compliance, of pharmacy equipment
  • Responsible for drug purchasing and ordering for cancer center departments via the system tools provided from the vendors and hospital, maintains inventories which are free from expired products. Restock supplies as needed, communicates shortages to purchasing technician, and orders proper items from central supply.
  • Performs procedures associated with PAP programs and drug replacements while cross-functionally working with appropriate staff which may include social worker teams.
  • Serves as an integral member of the work team, demonstrating technical/professional competence in the job role as stated in the following: operate all pharmacy automation systems, in accordance with the SOP, including but not limited to: MedSelect, tube systems, AWS examiner, Cerner, and ART; accurately replenish MedSelect machines; USP 797 and USP 800 compliance.
  • Training LRH IV personnel in IV chemotherapy admixture techniques, focuses on ongoing staff development, performs orientation of new technicians, maintains USP 797 and 800 compliance, performs/maintains medication waste log records
  • Maintains educational requirements to remain a certified technician with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board as well as registered with the Department of Health. Remains current with all LRH mandatory annual education.
  • Actively participates in team development, achieving dashboards, and in accomplishing department goals and objective.
  • Within scope of practice allowed under Pharmacy Practice Law, answers all questions that arise from LRH employees regarding medication storage, delivery location, and MedSelect. Refers questions outside of scope to pharmacist.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Use syringes, environmental maintenance, USP 797 and 800 as applicable; work well with others in a confined space
  • Ability to calculate, basic computer skills.
  • Apply the concept of aseptic technique.
