Job summary

California Virtual Academies seeks a High School Physics teacher to deliver standards-based instruction in a virtual setting. You will manage a caseload of physics and homeroom students, providing guidance, feedback, and assessments within three days of submission.

You will collaborate with regional leads, coordinate testing, and participate in state testing, parent conferences, and in-person events when possible. A California teaching credential is required.

ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA VIRTUAL ACADEMIES AND THE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER POSITIONS:

The California Virtual Academies (a network of 9 public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based instruction to students in grades TK-12 in California. We use K12, inc. as our curriculum provider for the basis of instruction and teachers provide live instruction via the Engageli platform. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are still required to log into the online school daily, complete coursework, and attend instructional sessions. High School teachers carry a caseload of both content and homeroom students. They meet with content students throughout the week in their virtual classrooms to provide standards-based direct and targeted instruction that meets the needs of the students. Teachers support students in coursework, offer additional one-to-one support, and provide feedback and grade work within three days of submission. They build lasting relationships with their homeroom students through daily homeroom sessions, consistent outreach throughout the school year with direct contact on a monthly basis, monitor attendance, progress, and engagement, as well as providing interventions as needed to ensure students remain engaged and continue learning. We do our best to assign homeroom students locally, as teachers are required to plan and attend in person outings and events. All teachers communicate regularly with learning coaches and families via telephone, web conferencing, and email. Teachers hold parent/teacher/student conferences quarterly, attend virtual meetings, and participate in PLCs, data conferencing, and professional development, both virtually and in-person. Teachers may meet with their students face-to-face for tutoring and at other in person opportunities. All teachers are required to proctor state testing.

HOURS AND SALARY INFORMATION:

Full time teachers work Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:00pm. You are not allowed to have another job during contracted hours. Full Time High School Teachers: Annual salary based on holding a Bachelors or Masters Degree and up to 3 years of experience in California. We do participate in CalSTRS. Please contact your CalSTRS counselor about how employment with any of the California Virtual Academies may affect your personal STRS account. Only full time employees are offered health, dental, and vision benefits. Benefits information is only given out upon offer. We do provide training for all programs and we have a great staff to serve as your support system.

REQUIRED CREDENTIAL/CERTIFICATION:

• Permanent California Residence (Must currently reside in 1 of the 42 counties we service students and hire in)
• Valid/current Preliminary/Clear/Life California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Science: Physics
• California English Learner Authorization- Issued by CTC

Overview:

Virtual schools are new models in public education. They look both backward to what we know works well in educating children, and forward to see how technology can help us implement these strategies with children. Virtual school teachers are part of a pioneering effort. Our teachers, therefore, need to share the school’s pioneering mission and approach.

Summary:

Our Virtual High School Teachers are responsible for ensuring that students achieve mastery of learning objectives. They provide guidance, instruction and support, manage the learning process and focus on students’ individual needs. The Virtual Teacher is a highly qualified instructional teacher responsible for the delivery of specified course content in an online, virtual environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Orienting students to their courses and communicating course and school requirements. This includes communicating via email, phone, in person and online classroom.
• Support homeroom students with general school information, schedule set-up, monitor student attendance and progress throughout the program. The homeroom teacher is a high school student’s first point of contact when an issue arises. The relationship between the homeroom teacher, student and family is vital to the success of our students. Live session support is provided to homeroom students who are struggling academically.
• Provide small group and direct instruction to students of course content.
• Participate in instructional coaching and develop instruction to address coaching goals.
• Augment course content in the form of remediation, modification, and enrichment.
• Implement student’s IEP’s and attend IEP conferences as needed.
• Set deadlines for student work and grant extensions as deemed appropriate.
• Face to Face meetings with students and teaching adult as scheduled. This may include in person or an online classroom meeting.
• Grade student work and enter grades into an online grade book in a timely manner (no more than 3 days without an update in grade book).
• Ensure all communication with families is documented according to school policies.
• Meet with regional lead teacher and/or curriculum specialist to discuss student data and set goals and actions for remediation. Instruction should be provided based on those action items.
• Follow all school policies.
• Participate in State Testing- this includes but is not limited to:
  • Proctoring throughout testing window and all other state mandated and school required assessments
  • Assigning students to test sites
  • Following up with students who have not tested and make arrangements for makeup testing.
  • Assisting site coordinator
  • Following up with student, parent and/or administrator if there are issues
  • Organizing testing materials
  • Contribute to and complete student progress and report cards.
• Hold Parent Teacher Conferences/ Check In Calls with homeroom families quarterly.
• Communicate with parents as needed; this includes but is not limited to:
  • Calling student
  • Emailing students and parents
  • Meeting students and parents synchronously, both online and in-person
  • Returning phone calls and emails as soon as possible but no longer than 24 hours
• Collaborate with other instructional teachers and support team.
• Organize orientation, training, social, and educational activities for students and families including attending community building activities such as school outings, college tours, and other events.
• Travel regularly within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings, and participate in school activities and events such as Teacher Collaboration Days and Student Orientations.
• Communicate with teachers, support staff, and Administration as needed. This includes but is not limited to calling and/or emailing teachers and Administration as needed and within 24 hours.
• Must attend all in person meetings as scheduled.
• Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

Teachers will be expected to help with the planning and delivery of Parent Orientations. This will entail contacting the families of assigned students, participating in and attending the event(s), and following up with families to ensure they are prepared for the start of school. Orientations will run during the end of the summer. Additionally, teachers are expected to participate actively in and attend High School Hangouts, Graduation, outings, and other in person events for students and families throughout the year.
