Qualifications

  • Prior cattle-handling experience preferred; BQA certification is a plus.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to animal welfare.

  • Handle incoming cattle calmly and confidently during processing.
  • Apply vaccines, tagging, deworming, and implants as needed.
  • Apply visual and electronic identification (EID) tags for traceability.
  • Operate and maintain chutes, syringes, taggers, and related equipment.
  • Work with cowboys and yard management to ensure smooth cattle flow.
  • Monitor animal behavior and report health concerns to foreman or vet.
  • Keep work areas organized and ready for the next set of cattle.
  • Assist with processing, doctoring, pen moves, or maintenance as needed.

Cactus Feeders is an Amarillo, Texas-based cattle company. Originally founded by the Engler Family in 1975, Cactus is now 100% Employee Owned, producing a million head of fed cattle annually. The company operates feedyards throughout the Texas Panhandle, Southwest Kansas, and Eastern Colorado.

About the Position

The Cattle Processor is a key part of the cowboy crew responsible for safely and efficiently handling cattle during processing. This role focuses on low-stress cattle handling, accurate recordkeeping, and teamwork to ensure every animal entering the yard gets off to a strong start.

Processors play an essential role in caring for cattle, operating equipment, and maintaining the pace and rhythm of the processing barn.

Key Responsibilities
  • Handle incoming cattle calmly and confidently during processing-vaccinating, tagging, deworming, and implanting as needed.
  • Apply visual and electronic identification (EID) tags for traceability and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Operate and maintain chutes, syringes, taggers, and related equipment according to company safety and sanitation standards.
  • Work alongside fellow cowboys and yard management to ensure smooth cattle flow and low-stress movement.
  • Monitor animal behavior and report health concerns promptly to the cattle foreman or veterinarian.
  • Keep work areas organized, clean, and ready for the next set of cattle.
  • Pitch in where needed-processing, doctoring, pen moves, or maintenance to support the overall operation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
