Job summary

Job Summary

The Special Procedures Technologist in the Cardiac Cath lab demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to adults and adult‑geriatric patients. Under direction, assumes responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement, equipment maintenance. Assists physicians in diagnosing and treatment within the Cardiac Cath Lab department. Performs a broad spectrum of radiographic procedures utilizing established radiation safety practices, and maintains thorough knowledge of radiation physics, anatomy and radiological techniques.

Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostic imaging and therapeutic vascular procedures following established radiation safety practices.
  • Greet patients, introduce self, explain procedures and post‑procedure care.
  • Verify exam order accuracy, check patient identity and collect pertinent history; document on requisition.
  • Complete consent, pregnancy, oxygen transport, medication reconciliation forms as indicated.
  • Demonstrate understanding of patient prep and protocols and comply with departmental processes.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality per HIPAA policy.
  • Complete all exams per department protocols and assess exam completeness.
  • Ensure patient safety: secure stretchers, bed rails; use proper IV technique; confirm contrast form; assemble film history file.
  • Organize work to meet service deadlines; maintain oxygen therapy for patients needing it.
  • Manage oxygen tanks, masks, nasal cannula, e‑cylinders; adjust flow rates per physician orders.
  • Maintain a clean work environment and communicate schedule changes to manager or supervisor.
  • Apply age‑specific safety practices for pediatrics, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients as outlined.
  • Progressive duties: Level 1 – competent; Level 2 – proficient; Level 3 – subject matter expert—include quality improvement, training, and mentorship.
Education and Licensure
  • High‑school diploma or GED; graduate of an accredited radiology program.
  • Completion of IABP, EKG, and hemodynamic monitoring classes within one year of employment.
  • Certified ARRT‑CRT.
  • Required certification: ACLS within one year; BLS (American Heart Association).
  • Preferred: RCIS (Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist).
Experience and Skills
  • Required: ≥1 yr as a radiology technologist.
  • Preferred: ≥1 yr experience in a cardiac or special‑procedures lab.
  • Effective organization, multi‑tasking, clear verbal and written communication.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique, medical terminology, contrast media, imaging protocols.
  • Strong reasoning, independent judgment, ability to work under stress and interruptions.
  • Preferred: Bilingual English/Spanish.
Knowledge and Technology
  • Medical terminology, contrast media, imaging protocols, cardiac anatomy and physiology; EKG interpretation.
  • Basic computer skills.

  • Professional appearance, grooming, and adherence to dress code.
  • Availability for variable shifts, weekends, holidays, and on‑call duties.
