Job summary

UPMC St. Margaret is seeking a casual phlebotomist to support outpatient lab operations, covering PTO and call-offs with 4–12 hour shifts, based on department needs and your availability. The role involves teamwork and delivering quality patient service.

Candidates must have at least one year of full-time phlebotomy experience (outpatient preferred). Weekday opportunities with occasional Saturdays and rotating holidays are available, fitting flexible schedules.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year of full-time phlebotomy experience (not including clinicals or school).
• Outpatient phlebotomy experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers in a courteous, professional manner.
• Collect blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick as required.
• Follow patient identification procedures and ensure proper sample handling.
• Transport specimens to the appropriate lab sections per safety procedures.
• Maintain supplies and monitor cost-effective usage of reagents and materials.
• Train or orient new staff and students as assigned.
• Inform supervisors of unusual or problematic incidents.
• May perform arterial puncture following guidelines.
• Enter demographic and test information accurately in the system.

In this role, you'll help support outpatient lab operations by providing coverage for PTO, call-offs, and other staffing needs, with flexible scheduling and shift lengths ranging from 4 to 12 hours based on department needs and your availability. Responsibilities:

• Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
• Following proper patient identification procedures, procures appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick. As required, instructs patients on the collection procedures for laboratory specimens that are obtained by the patient, and may collect samples other than blood.
• Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
• Specimen collection may be performed at off‑site locations. Transports specimens from on- and off‑site collection areas to the appropriate section of the laboratory following established safety procedures.
• Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, including hand hygiene techniques and proper isolation precautions., compliance and personnel policies.
