Job summary

The Utah Department of Corrections invites applications for a Caseworker I in Salt Lake City. This role supports rehabilitation goals by coordinating services, conducting risk-based interventions, and partnering with probation and parole teams to monitor progress.

Ideal candidates will have strong case management, exceptional communication, and experience working with justice-involved individuals. The position is full-time, on-site, with a starting wage of $24.95 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Resource coordination to connect clients with housing, transportation, employment, medical, mental health, and social services.
  • Intervention and counseling through psycho-educational classes addressing criminogenic risks and substance use/mental health disorders.
  • Help clients obtain identification documents (birth certificates, driver's licenses, tribal IDs).
  • Maintain professional communication with Adult Probation and Parole Agents and Supervisors regarding client treatment progress.
  • Perform other duties to support the center’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

As a Caseworker, you will play a pivotal role in our clients' rehabilitation journeys. Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Resource Coordination: Actively connect clients with vital community services, including housing, transportation, employment, medical, mental health, and other social services.
  • Intervention & Counseling: Facilitate psycho-educational classes addressing criminogenic risks, and provide targeted counseling for individuals dealing with substance use and mental health disorders (services may extend to family members).
  • Documentation Assistance: Help clients obtain critical identification documents (e.g., birth certificates, driver's licenses, tribal IDs).
  • Collaboration: Maintain consistent, professional written and verbal communication with Adult Probation and Parole Agents and Supervisors regarding client treatment progress.
  • Adaptability: Perform other duties as required to support the center’s mission.
Qualifications & Skills
To be successful in this role, you should possess knowledge or proficiency in:
  • Human behavior, behavioral health management, and risk/needs assessments.
  • Local community resources, collateral agencies, and social service providers.
  • Modern workplace technology (Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and standard UDC software).
  • The justice system, including its rules, records, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Professional report writing and document composition.
  • Evidence-based interviewing techniques (e.g., Motivational Interviewing).
  • SSI/SSDI applications (including SOAR certification).
  • Facilitating Psych Education classes
  • VA resource Coordinator
  • Medicaid/Medicare programs including Voc Rehabilitation or SNAP.
Supplemental Information & Job Requirements
  • Preference is given to individuals holding a Certified Substance Use Disorder Counselor (SUDC) certification or licensure as a Social Service Worker (SSW)
  • Working Environment: This position operates within an institutional/correctional environment. Applicants must be comfortable working directly with an offender population where inherent safety risks, unusual environmental stress, or the potential for physical confrontation exist.
  • Physical Demands: Requires regular physical exertion, including standing, walking over rough surfaces, bending, crouching, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs. for extended periods.
