  • Five+ years of supervisory experience directing shop-related work.
  • Member of Laborers Local 681 or eligibility to join after one month.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate maintenance and renewal of building systems within budget.
  • Organize work for carpentry & paint staff for efficient performance.
  • Hire and manage contractors as required and supervise multiple crews.
  • Prepare reports on condition, renewal needs, and maintenance activities.
  • Identify safety training opportunities and ensure OSHA compliance.

Job Summary:

Manages all shop-related work and personnel associated with the carpentry- and paint-related maintenance, upkeep, and renewal of the Evanston/Chicago campus buildings' buildings and structures. Typical infrastructure includes interior partitions, ceilings, flooring, doorways, masonry, exterior facades, porches, and roofs, finishes, wall coverings, window films, and signage. Coordinates and implements various maintenance and related projects which includes estimating scope and costs, and supervising multiple crews. Provides direction to staff with responsibility for managing and evaluating performance. Ensures timely completion of all shop-related paperwork and electronic approvals including service requests and timesheets. Cultivates good customer relations.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates maintenance and renewal of building systems to meet the established annual budget, including the hiring and management of contractors as required;
  • Organizes work for planned and unscheduled maintenance tasks directed to carpentry & paint staff for efficient and effective performance;
  • Maintains good order and discipline among personnel consistent with University and departmental policies, initiating commendatory or corrective action as appropriate;
  • Prepares written and oral reports on the condition, renewal needs, and routine maintenance of facilities, components, and related activities including post-incident summaries and root cause analyses;
  • Identifies and recommends employee safety, technical, soft-skill training, and professional development opportunities as required to ensure optimum unit performance and development;
  • Ensures compliance with applicable OSHA requirements and jurisdictional codes;
  • Interviews and recommends hiring or promotion of qualified staff, and performs annual employee performance reviews of subordinate personnel;
  • Estimates carpentry & paint related project work scope, budgets, and timelines;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to effectively motivate work groups toward defined and agreed upon common goals;
  • Working knowledge of BOCA, ADA, State, Local, and other associated building codes;

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Certifications, Skills)

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
  • Training and/or development experience equivalent to a full apprenticeship plus relevant work experience of ten (10) years or more in interior and exterior carpentry or paint at the journeyman level;
  • Minimum five (5) or more years of supervisory experience in planning, directing, and coordinating shop-related work;
  • Be a member of Laborers Local 681, or join after one month of employment;
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license recognized by the State of Illinois (as applicable), provide own reliable transportation, and purchase a University parking permit.

Preferred Qualifications (Education, Experience, Certifications, Skills)

  • Experience managing multiple trades and complex projects
  • Successfully uses multiple software program independently. Software may include Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, CMMS Systems;
  • Proficiency with mobile devices including iOS.

Target hiring pay for this position will be $62.50 per hour as determined by the Local 681 CBA. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data
