Job summary

Paradise Animal Hospital in Augusta, GA, is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment. The role includes monitoring hospitalized pets, preparing prescriptions, and assisting with surgical procedures, with a schedule of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and no weekend shifts.

The ideal candidate has veterinary experience or strong related skills, excellent communication, organization, and the ability to handle lab work and radiographs

Qualifications

• Experience as a veterinary assistant or similar role preferred.
• Ability to work on weekends as required.
• Strong communication skills to ensure patient safety.
• Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift over 25 pounds with assistance.
• OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE.
• Basic math for calculating medication dosages.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed.
• Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, and providing client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs during surgery.
• Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
• Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following proper safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
• Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
• Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment and lab areas; restock supplies; ensure public areas are clean.
• Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients; show compassion and care for patients.
• Communicate with veterinarians and team members including client discussions and patient plans.
