Job description

Caretaker - Detailed Cleaner

This work involves the cleaning and maintenance of patient facilities in the Vet Teaching Hospital. The caretaker performs a daily and weekly schedule of detailed cleaning tasks for both small and large animal units, including the use of chemicals for disinfection, pressure washing, and handling of animal waste.

Responsibilities

Small Animal Detailed Cleaning:

  • Daily tasks: Check service area floors, treatment areas, cage, and run floors; wipe down scales; perform laundry pick‑up; stock and distribute small animal food; maintain 24-hour unit floors.
  • Weekly tasks: Clean drains behind runs; vacuum or dust vents; clean dermatology service; remove waste from the dog walk area followed by pressure washing.

Large Animal Detailed Cleaning:

  • Daily tasks: Perform the necropsy run for large and small animal units; change mop water, rinse mop buckets, and change mop heads; vacuum/sweep barn aisles; distribute hay/feed; sweep and disinfect scales; clean exam rooms; disinfect door handles, buttons, and countertops.
  • Weekly tasks: Assist with barn aisle cleaning; redistribute water buckets and feed pans in barns; clean interior drains; clean outside of barns especially isolation barn; change mop water and mop heads; clean feed bins; disinfect and replace cleaning tools; clean walkways outside barns with a backpack blower and pressure wash; remove cobwebs; pick up the Bar G Order; replenish gas tanks for large animal tractors, carts, and work trucks; transport unowned animals to the county animal shelter; order, stock, and distribute shavings; test/calibrate rescue wall stations monthly.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum).
  • Preferred experience with farm animals, operation of a regular truck and forklift, and experience in an infectious disease environment requiring deep cleaning and sanitation.
  • Ability to handle large and small animals, maintain sanitation/disinfection techniques for large animals and small ruminants, stand for long periods, and work well interpersonally with diverse staff.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs, sit, stand, stoop, bend, walk intermittently, and work with cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  • Driving experience required; must be able to drive for job‑related duties.
