Job summary

StoryPoint Group in Johnston, IA seeks a Caregiver/Medication Manager to provide caring and personal assistance for residents and help manage their medications, supporting daily living activities.

The role requires completion of CPR and First Aid, and ability to obtain a Medication Manager certification on-site if not already certified; prior healthcare or geriatric experience is preferred to support elderly residents with compassion and respect.

Responsibilities

  • Bathe and clean residents as needed (bed bath, shower, whirlpool).
  • Follow medication administration protocols for each resident.
  • Assist in grooming (teeth, hair, nails, makeup, glasses).
  • Make beds, change linens, tidy rooms.
  • Answer emergency calls promptly.
  • Assist with bedpan, urinal, and bedside commode as needed; monitor continence briefs.
  • Record vital signs and report unusual changes to nurse or Executive Director.
  • Assist in transport, ambulation, positioning, ROM and other ADLs; ensure safety.
  • Maintain resident privacy and dignity per rights guidelines.
  • Provide and participate in activity programming and care for residents.
  • Aid in admissions, transfers and discharges, prep rooms for new residents.
  • Complete daily assignment sheets; follow universal precautions and infection control.

As a Caregiver/Medication Manager you are responsible for providing caring and personal assistance for residents living in our community as well as passing their medication. This position will assist residents in all day-to-day functions.

Required Experience for Universal Caregiver
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to obtain Medication Manager certification on-site at community if not already certified.
  • Previous Healthcare, Geriatrics or experience working with the elderly population preferred.
  • Desire to work with geriatric population.
  • Training per state requirements
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid certification.
Responsibilities for Universal Caregiver
  • Bathe and clean, as needed, both male and female residents by bed bath, shower and/or whirlpool.
  • Follow medication administration protocols as identified for each individual resident.
  • Assist in grooming of both male and female residents (cleaning teeth, shampooing/combing hair, cleaning and cutting nails, applying make-up, shaving and cleaning glasses).
  • Make residents beds and change linens as needed, clean up room and closet, picking up unnecessary articles and arranging room neatly.
  • Answer emergency calls promptly.
  • Assist residents with bedpan, urinal, and bedside commode or to bathroom as needed and/or as directed. Check and change incontinent brief every two hours or more frequently if needed.
  • Take and give notice in writing, vital signs (temp, pulse, respiration & blood pressure), heights and weights as requested, report abnormal or unusual signs to nurse or Executive Director. Report skin breakdown, pressure sores and changes in residents physical/mental condition to nurse or executive Director immediately.
  • Report unusual color or odor of excretions (urine, drainage, stool or sputum) before discarding it.
  • Assist in the transport, transfer, ambulation, frequent positioning, provide ROM to residents and all other ADLs as assigned. Use measures that ensure resident and associate safety. Request assistance when lifting, turning and moving residents, using lifting devices when needed. Transport to activities, meals and appointments as requested.
  • Help maintain personal dignity of each resident by ensuring privacy and treating them with respect. Understand and follow Resident Bill of Rights.
  • Provide, direct and participate in activity programming and activity-based care for the residents.
  • Assist in admission, transfer and discharge of residents including ensuring rooms are ready for admit and assist resident with belongings upon discharge.
  • Complete Daily Assignment sheets during shift and according to instructions using only authorized abbreviations.
  • Follow universal precautions and isolation procedures for infection control.
  • Report all accidents or incidents observed on the shift they occurred as well as suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation immediately.
  • Maintain all equipment and supplies in proper condition.
  • Perform day-to-day housekeeping functions as assigned.
  • Perform specific tasks in accordance with daily work assignments.
  • Respond and assist with any resident, staff, guest or campus emergency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
General Working Conditions

This position entails standing for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to communicate effectively with others, sit, stand, walk and use hands to handle keyboard, telephone, paper, files, and other equipment and objects. The employee must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and push/pull equipment frequently. The employee is expected to possess good organization skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. The employee must be compassionate and empathetic. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee may frequently bend, reach, grasp, and climb. The employee may need to squat and kneel. The work environment requires appropriate interaction with others. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Occasional travel to different locations may be required.
