Job Title: Care Worker / Support Worker

Service: Domiciliary Care / Homecare

Reporting to: Care Coordinator / Registered Manager / Senior Care Worker

Location: Community / Service Users' Homes

Job Summary

The Care Worker / Support Worker will provide safe, compassionate, person-centred care and support to individuals in their own homes and within the community. The role involves promoting people's dignity, privacy, independence, choice, wellbeing and rights, while supporting them to live as independently as possible.

The successful candidate will work in accordance with each individual's care plan, risk assessments, safeguarding procedures and organisational policies, ensuring that care is delivered safely and respectfully and that people's individual needs and preferences are understood and met. This reflects CQC requirements around person-centred care, dignity, consent and safe care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide person-centred care based on each service user's assessed needs, preferences and care plan.
  • Assist with personal care, including washing, bathing, dressing, grooming, continence care and oral care where required.
  • Support service users with mobility and transfers, using appropriate equipment and moving-and-handling techniques.
  • Support with nutrition and hydration, including meal preparation and encouraging appropriate fluid intake.
  • Support service users with medication in accordance with their care plan, medication policy and level of competence.
  • Promote independence and encourage service users to make their own choices and decisions wherever possible.
  • Maintain people's privacy, dignity, confidentiality and respect at all times.
  • Recognise and report signs of abuse, neglect, deterioration, illness, accidents or safeguarding concerns immediately through the appropriate procedures.
  • Follow health and safety, infection prevention and control, lone-working, fire safety and risk-management procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, factual and timely care records and report any changes in a service user's condition.
  • Communicate effectively with service users, families, colleagues, healthcare professionals and other relevant professionals.
  • Support service users to maintain relationships, participate in activities and access their local community where appropriate.
  • Work within the boundaries of your competence and seek advice or assistance when required.
  • Attend mandatory training, supervision, team meetings and other learning and development activities.
  • Follow the organisation's policies, procedures, code of conduct and CQC requirements.

Qualifications and Training

Previous care experience is desirable, but suitable applicants may be considered subject to the organisation's recruitment, induction and competency processes.

Staff should receive an appropriate induction and training relevant to their role. CQC specifically expects providers to identify staff training needs and ensure training aligns with the Care Certificate standards, statutory requirements and the needs of the people being supported.

CQC also expects staff to receive appropriate supervision, support, professional development and appraisal, with competence assessed before staff work independently where appropriate.

Recruitment and Compliance

All appointments will be subject to the organisation's safer recruitment procedures and relevant pre-employment checks. This may include verification of identity, employment history, references, right-to-work requirements and appropriate criminal record checks.

CQC Regulation 19 requires providers to ensure that people employed are fit and proper for their role, including having the necessary character, qualifications, skills and experience.
