Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Cardiovascular/Electrophysiology Laboratory Manager and according to established protocols, assists clinically and technically in invasive and non-invasive cardiac catheterization/electrophysiology procedures using specialized equipment while maintaining patient safety and comfort. Sets up, operates, and maintains specialized physiological systems and instrumentation used for patient monitoring during these procedures. May assist physicians in preparing and performing procedures. Acquires, enters, and records data, performs tests and calculations, and shares essential information through documentation and verbal communication. Participates in continuous process improvement activities within the unit.
Responsibilities:
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Cardiac Catheterization:
- Set up, activate, and check all monitoring and recording equipment necessary for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Balance and calibrate equipment such as hemodynamic recorders, blood gas apparatus, transducers, and cardiac output computers.
- Operate biomedical equipment to monitor patient status and acquire data, including digital angiography, ECG, blood gas analysis, contrast injectors, intracoronary ultrasound, and AngioJet.
- Set up fluoroscopy and cineangiography radiologic equipment as prescribed.
- Operate and maintain x-ray darkroom functions including developing, editing, splicing, and storing cine films.
- Assess equipment for proper functioning, reliability, and cleanliness; notify management of malfunctions.
- Record raw data, perform calculations, and monitor patient hemodynamic status during procedures, alerting physicians to changes.
- Transport patients as needed.
- Prepare the lab, equipment, and supplies prior to procedures, and assist in maintaining sterile and clean environments.
- Participate in research projects and perform other related duties.
Electrophysiology:
- Perform technical operations for routine and advanced electrophysiology procedures, including monitoring and diagnostic testing.
- Manage complex technical equipment, troubleshoot, and repair as needed.
- Participate in procedural activities such as room prep, sterile setup, cleanup, and inventory management.
- Assist with documentation, data entry, and report generation.
- Assist as a scrub tech during device implants, following aseptic techniques.
- Transport patients and equipment as needed.
Other Information:
Basic Knowledge:
Associate degree in an AMA-accredited allied health field or a related certification is required.
Licensed Radiologic Technologist or RCIS/RCES certification required.
Certification in BLS and ACLS required within 3 months of hire.
Knowledge of patient care across the lifespan, considering aging, development, and cultural patterns.
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year in a Cardiac Cath Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, or Interventional Radiology Lab.
Experience with setup and maintenance of Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology equipment.
Skills in data interpretation, intracardiac data measurement, ECG interpretation, sterile techniques, and patient monitoring.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Work involves exposure to radiation, blood samples, electrical hazards, and requires physical activity including walking, standing, lifting, and carrying.
Independent Action:
Performs independently within department policies, referring complex issues to supervisors.
