This hospital-based cardiothoracic surgery facility maintains established clinical infrastructure and protocols to support coordinated locum tenens coverage across inpatient and emergency department settings. The facility provides adult cardiac and thoracic surgical services and is structured to facilitate 24-hour call-based coverage with defined response time expectations. On-site resources are in place to support continuity of care for the cardiothoracic surgery service line throughout each assigned coverage period.
The assignment is located in a waterfront city along the St. Johns River, offering clinicians a range of recreational and cultural activities during time away from clinical duties. The Northbank Riverwalk provides access to waterfront views, passing boat traffic, and the free light and music show at Friendship Fountain. Outdoor pursuits include fishing, kayaking, biking the Baldwin Trail's 14.5 miles of tree-lined paths, and exploring the local arboretum and botanical gardens. Local markets, food tours, brewery tours, escape rooms, and monthly art walks reflect the breadth of experiences available throughout the area.
The Physician Associate will provide 24-hour cardiothoracic surgery call coverage on an inpatient and emergency department basis, with weekday and weekend coverage required based on the monthly schedule, averaging 5 to 7 days per month. Coverage spans the full hospital-based cardiothoracic surgery service line, including emergent call, inpatient and ED consultations, and operative coverage; clinicians must respond by phone within 15 minutes and be present on-site within 30 minutes when required. Clinical responsibilities include surgical first-assist for adult cardiac and thoracic cases - CABG, valve repair/replacement, aortic and thoracic procedures, lung resections, emergency cardiac procedures, and thoracic trauma management - as well as Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH) including saphenous vein conduit harvesting; competency in EVH is required or must be demonstrable. Postoperative and inpatient patient management, bedside and procedural duties within approved APP scope, and collaboration with Trauma Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care/Intensivists, and Radiology are additional components of this assignment.
