Job summary

Michigan State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking a Cardiology Veterinary Nurse to provide patient care for ill and injured animals in the Cardiology unit. You will assist students, veterinary nurses and veterinarians, and help maintain supplies and cleanliness of hospital areas.

In this role, you will demonstrate techniques to students and support the Cardiology team in clinical procedures, anesthesia, and patient management within a busy teaching hospital environment.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Veterinary Technology required from college/technical school.
• Six months to one year of related animal patient care experience preferred in clinical settings.
• Licensed as a Veterinary Technician in Michigan or able to obtain certification within one year of employment.

Working/Functional Title

Cardiology Veterinary Nurse

Position Summary

Provide patient care for ill and injured animals in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This position will primarily be working in the Cardiology unit of the Small Animal Clinic; instructs and demonstrates techniques to students; assists students, veterinary nurse and veterinarians in their work; maintains supplies, equipment and cleanliness of hospital areas.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Six months to one year as a veterinary technician in an educational setting

Experience In Cardiology Procedures Is Preferred

Summary of Physical Demands

Will be required to lift medical equipment and animals into cages; carry animals between cages and exam tables/gurneys; push carts containing animals and equipment to other areas of the hospital; climb stairs carrying lab samples; restrain animals. Lifting up to 50lbs individually and up to 150lbs as a team.

Summary of Health Risks

Working with animals or unfixed tissue. May wear respirator. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases.
