Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas seeks an experienced ultrasound technologist to support diagnostic imaging and research protocols.

Responsibilities include preparing patients, operating echocardiography equipment, performing cardiac studies, ensuring data accuracy, and notifying physicians of results. Requires ARDMS registry and accredited program, with BLS, plus preferred 2 years of cardiovascular experience.

Qualifications

• Current ARDMS registry in Adult Echocardiography or equivalent accredited program.
• Program must include didactic and supervised clinical Echocardiography experience.
• BLS certification required; ARDMS and CCI exams within 1 year.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates patient throughput, explains procedure, and ensures privacy.
• Positions patient and operates ultrasound equipment for quality images.
• Records measurements, enters data, and communicates findings to physicians.
• Performs ultrasound studies including Cardiac Doppler and 2D Echo; learns new modalities.
• Archives studies, ensures reports are read, and logs procedures for charging.

Works under moderate supervision to provide professional and technical skills involving the use of ultrasound in medical diagnosis and evaluation of patients. Performs both clinical and/or research protocols.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required

• Education: Current ARDMS registry in Adult Echocardiography or successful completion of an ultrasound or cardiovascular technology program which includes verified didactic & supervised clinical experience in Echocardiography. These programs should be accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
• Experience: Regional Center locations may have higher experience requirements based on clinic or standard of care.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • (ARDMS) AMER REGIS DIAG MED SONO – New hires will be required to pass the ARDMS credentialing exam within 1 year.
  • (CCI) CREDENTIALNG CARDIOVASCLR INTL – New hires will be required to pass the CCI credentialing exam within 1 year.
  • (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT – Course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required Upon Hire.

Preferred

• 2 years of cardiovascular sonography experience

JOB DUTIES

• Facilitates patient throughput and enhances patient satisfaction with the testing process. Checks computer for new orders, reviews physician's orders on patient's chart, identifies patients via two methods, explains procedure, protects patient's privacy, and transports patients safely and efficiently.
• Reviews patient chart to include patient's history and clinical diagnosis, recognizing significant clinical information and historical facts that may affect the echo study from patient interview and medical record.
• Positions patient to optimize quality of test results, utilizes appropriate transducers/equipment during performance, monitors the patient for signs of possible complications, and promptly notifies nurse/physician of changes in patient status.
• Records all measurements, performs accurate mathematical calculations, and enters correct patient information into the system.
• Demonstrates the ability to accurately perform ultrasound procedures including but not limited to Cardiac Doppler, Color Flow Doppler, Two Dimensional Echo, Transesophageal Echo, pharmacological echo studies, and stress echo. Learns new modalities as they become available.
• Provides best image quality within the limitations imposed by available resources, delineates normal and abnormal anatomic structures, physiology, and hemodynamics, and recognizes findings that may require immediate clinical response; notifies the interpreting physician or other appropriate physician.
• Archives and retrieves studies, provides proper care and use of digital echo system and transducers/probes, checks bi-weekly to ensure all studies have been read and finalized, notifies the reading cardiologist and the Medical Director of Non‑Invasive Cardiology of delinquent reports, troubleshoots minor problems, and contacts appropriate HIS coordinator for system problems.
• Logs all procedures for charging purposes and ensures the Cardiology Office receives the log prior to the end of the day.
• Assumes accountability for all actions in the workplace; reports errors promptly and takes appropriate follow‑up action to rectify the error.
• Acts as an effective patient/family advocate, responding to patient and/or family complaints appropriately and reporting them to the Manager or designee in a timely manner; utilizes the chain of command appropriately to resolve patient, operational, or personal work‑related problems.
• Participates in performance improvement activities as directed, attending at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and 100% of mandatory educational sessions.
• Works cooperatively with all staff and supports staff new to the environment.
• Duties may include core functions such as directly interacting with or caring for patients; interacting with human‑subjects research participants; maintaining/modifying/releasing patient or research records; or maintaining/modifying/releasing research records.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
