Job summary

UnityPoint Health in Cedar Rapids is seeking a dedicated Cardiac Sonographer to join their IAC Accredited Echo Lab. This role involves performing transthoracic, transesophageal, and pediatric echocardiograms while supporting advanced echo-guided procedures for a large team of hospital-employed Cardiologists.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from a program in health science eligible for certification in Adult Echocardiography.
  • Current AE certification; if not current, must be obtained within 6 months.
  • Prefer one year of hospital or clinic experience with adult and pediatric populations.

  • Assist physicians in developing individualized plans of care.

Overview

We are looking for a Cardiac Sonographer to join our busy IAC Accredited Echo Lab that supports a large group of hospital‑employed Cardiologists. The role involves performing transthoracic, transesophageal, pediatric, and stress echocardiograms, as well as supporting advanced echo‑guided procedures.

Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
  • Assess patient and family needs, provide education, and facilitate continuity of care
  • Assist physicians in developing individualized plans of care through collaborative approaches
  • Promptly complete documentation to ensure accurate legal records
  • Deliver high‑quality care, demonstrating specialty knowledge and skills in Diagnostic Cardiology
  • Apply a holistic approach considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria
  • Use critical thinking in judgment, maintaining responsibility for patient conditions
  • Maintain proficiency in manual skills for transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography
  • Operate ultrasound machines, transducers, PACs, echo reporting systems, and patient monitoring systems
  • Understand and apply radiation safety practices, device usage, and exposure limits
Development & Patient Education
  • Engage in professional development and activities that enhance Cardiac Sonographer practice, including networking and research
  • Complete 30 CME hours per 3 years, plus additional CME for lab accreditation
  • Select teaching strategies appropriate to patients’ age, culture, gender, readiness, and comprehension
  • Consult hospital resources to provide specialized education
  • Prioritize patient and workplace safety, preventing errors and reporting concerns immediately
Department Support
  • Meet standby call requirements, maintaining a 20‑minute response time between primary residence and hospital
Basic UPH Performance Criteria
  • Adhere to UnityPoint Health Values, Standards of Behaviors, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Maintain regular, reliable attendance to meet department business needs
  • Maintain current licenses and/or certifications relevant to the position
  • Apply knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, DNV, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies
  • Complete all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year
  • Be knowledgeable about compliance for federally funded programs, reporting concerns promptly and taking appropriate action
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements

A graduate of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate program in health science (e.g., cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology) who meets eligibility for certification in Adult Echocardiography through the ARDMS or CCI.

Preferred Or Specialized

Not required but advantageous.

Education

Diploma, associate, or baccalaureate in a health science field (e.g., cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology).

Experience

Prefer one year of hospital or clinic experience with adult and pediatric populations.

License(s)/Certification(s)

Current AE certification (ARDMS or CCI); if not current, must be obtained within 6 months of hire. Current driver’s license. Current BLS certification, to be obtained within 3 months of hire.

Current AE and Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) certification; if not current, must be obtained within 12 months of hire or 12 months after completing AE certification if not current.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Fluent English, multicultural sensitivity, basic computer skills (Microsoft Office), customer/patient focus, independent critical thinking, and decision‑making.

Other

Use of standard equipment to perform essential functions. Occasional travel to other UPH facilities may be required; driving may involve a UPH vehicle, rental, or own vehicle.
