Job summary

UAB Medicine’s Cardiac Cath Lab team performs a broad range of outpatient diagnostics and interventional procedures to manage cardiovascular conditions. You’ll work with advanced imaging technologies in three labs, contributing to heart catheterization, PCI, stent placement, and TAVR procedures.

You will perform ultrasound exams, ensure image quality and patient data integrity, and support a high-performing imaging team in a busy cardiovascular service line at St Vincent's Birmingham.

Qualifications

• BLS Provider required within 30 days of hire or transfer date (American Heart Association or Red Cross accepted)
• Cardiographic Sonographer credential issued by CCI must be obtained prior to hire or within 12 months of hire date
• Radiologic Technologist (Radiography) credentialed by ARRT obtained prior to or within 12 months of hire date
• Radiologic Technologist (Sonography) credentialed by ARRT obtained prior to or within 12 months of hire date
• ARDMS credential (e.g., RDCS/RVS/VT) obtained within 12 months of hire date
• Graduate of an accredited sonography program preferred
• High School Diploma with 2 years experience or Associate’s degree required

Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic ultrasound exams to provide high-quality images for interpretation
• Set up and adjust all equipment; maneuver transducers for exams
• Ensure safety standards and perform quality control procedures
• Assist in a variety of cardiac and vascular imaging procedures
• Maintain image quality and proper patient data for PACS submission
• Keep department clean and compliant with regulatory standards
• Report equipment issues promptly and assist in maintenance

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent with 2 years of experience OR Associate’s degree

Graduate of an accredited sonography program (preferred)

Our Cardiac Cath Lab team provides a comprehensive range of outpatient diagnostics and interventional procedures to manage and treat patients dealing with cardiovascular conditions. Utilizing advanced technology in three fully equipped cardiac catheterization labs, you’ll work as part of a team providing a variety of services, including heart catheterization, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), stent placement, and balloon angioplasty. We also specialize in advanced imaging techniques such as intravascular imaging (IVUS, OCT) and functional assessments (FFR, iFR) as well as structural heart procedures like transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), MitraClip, PFO closure, and device implantation.

Job Description

Perform diagnostic procedures on patients using ultrasound waves to examine tissue and body structure, providing quality images for interpretation.

• Sets up and adjusts all equipment and manually maneuvers transducers to perform exams.
• Implements safety standards and performs appropriate quality control procedures.
• Performs routine and complex studies and assists in a variety of cardiac and/or vascular imaging procedures.
• Recognizes significant structures, artifacts, pathology and equipment limitations.
• Ensures equipment is properly functioning. Reports potential problems or equipment malfunction to appropriate personnel. Lock/tag out equipment if appropriate.
• Ensures prompt submission of high-quality of all images and documents sent to PACS (image quality, correct lead markers and patient data/history).
• Assists in maintaining a clean, and orderly department to include procedure rooms, storage areas, dressing rooms, film storage area and any other areas in department.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory agencies.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

• BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
• One or more of the following required:
  • A Cardiographic Sonographer credential issued by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) must be obtained prior to hire or within 12 months (1 year) of hire date. Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) credential issued by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) is also accepted.
  • Radiologic Technologist specializing in Radiography credentialed from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) obtained prior to or within 12 Months (1 year) of hire date.
  • Radiologic Technologist specializing in Sonography credentialed from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) obtained prior to or within 12 Months (1 year) of hire date.
  • Vascular Technologist (VT) credentialed from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) obtained prior to hire date.
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credentialed from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) obtained within 12 Months (1 year) of hire date.

Education:

• High School Diploma or Equivalent with 2 years of experience or Associate’s degree required. Graduate of an accredited sonography program preferred.
