Job summary

UNC Health in North Carolina is seeking a Special Procedures/Cardiac Cath Technologist to perform radiologic assessments under radiologist supervision. You will assist with image-guided vascular procedures and manage equipment, documentation, and patient care in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements include two years of radiologic technology training, NC RN licensure, ARRT registration with VI preferred, and BLS certification. The role is full-time and on-site at Wayne Health.

Qualifications

  • Completion of two years of formal Radiologic Technology training in a school approved by the AMA.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
  • Registration by the ARRT required. VI Radiography certification preferred. BLS certification.

Summary

The Special Procedures/Cardiac Cath Technologist performs a variety of technical procedures for the application of prescribed ionizing radiation for radiological assessment, diagnosis and therapy. Works under the direction of a radiologist. Assists physicians with minimally invasive, image-guided vascular procedures, including angioplasty, stenting, thrombolysis, and others to capture images of blood vessels and treat organ-system diseases.

Responsibilities
  • Performs diagnostic, special and radiographic procedures.
  • Assists in all aspects of invasive procedures, including scrubbing, circulating, monitoring and recording hemodynamic parameters in accordance to policy and procedure.
  • Prepares patient for exams. Confirms that pertinent forms (i.e., consents) are complete for procedures.
  • Administers contrast media according to provider orders. Demonstrates knowledge of IV therapy techniques (i.e., verifies type, concentration, amount and expiration date).
  • Operates all equipment/devices as appropriate including but not limited to radiology equipment and related to the transfer of images to the PACS system, checking image quality and proper identification.
  • Positions patient on examination table and adjusts immobilization devices as required to obtain optimum views of specified area of the body requested by physician.
  • Takes appropriate precautions to minimize radiation exposure to patient.
  • Ensures documentation is complete and accurate in all systems. Monitors and records all procedural data.
  • Performs QC tech functions as requested.
  • Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating quality management programs for Special Procedures and Diagnostic Radiology.
  • Demonstrates equipment and procedure competency during call-back procedure.
  • Maintains, cleans, and restocks assigned room and notifies supervisor of unavailable supplies.
  • Works at such a pace and demonstrates organizational skills as to ensure no backlogs of work or undue delays in patient flow.
  • Operates equipment and technology safely and properly. Reports problems or malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to assist wherever needed. Has an understanding that shifts may have to be altered due to workload or staffing at supervisor's discretion.
  • Assists the Diagnostic Supervisor with instruction of new teammates.
  • Assists the clinical instructor with instruction of student technologists.
  • Is available and flexible to take call as required to ensure coverage for the area.
  • Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings and on committees as requested.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.
  • Demonstrates appropriate interaction with and provides recommended care and services to all patients. Exhibits knowledge and basic understanding regarding the needs of neonatal, adolescent, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and the cultural needs of all patients.
  • Applies knowledge of principles of standard precautions. Routinely uses PPE to avoid risk of exposure to self and others. WAYNE
Education Requirements
  • Completion of two years of formal Radiologic Technology training in a school approved by the Council of Education of the American Medical Association.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
  • Registration by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) required. Vascular-Interventional (VI) Radiography certification preferred. BLS certification required.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • Minimum one year experience as a Registered Diagnostic Technologist required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Radiology Special Procedures equipment, special procedure examinations and specific supplies used.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Radiology Special Procedure equipment, examination protocols and specific supplies.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work at such a pace and demonstrate organizational skills as to ensure no backlogs of work or undue delays in patient flow.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities, e.g., maturity, job knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, etc.
  • Ability to assume responsibilities for department function in the absence of on-site supervision.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Proficient with MS Office and Epic, with the ability to learn new software rapidly.
