Job description

Job Summary

Per‑Diem, various shifts. Approximate Pay Range: $68.03 – $86.18. Under general supervision, responsible for maintaining a therapeutic environment for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, pacemakers, and angiography. The Cath Lab Tech performs a wide variety of specialized invasive cardiovascular diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that assist in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Responsibilities
  • Perform specialized and routine diagnostic and interventional radiology procedures.
  • Assist qualified physicians in fluoroscopic and special X‑ray examinations.
  • Record, store, retrieve, and analyze data obtained during procedures.
  • Monitor patients to recognize changes in ECG rhythm and blood pressure, document findings, and communicate immediately to the corresponding physician.
  • Assist with procedures, ensuring maximum compliance with aseptic technique by the team.
  • Provide imaging during procedures.
  • Complete documentation, reports, and data entry on computerized systems.
  • Maintain equipment, perform quality control tests, troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs as needed.
  • Assist with restocking supplies for the cardiac catheterization lab.
  • Set up, maintain, and monitor IABP equipment.
  • Act as preceptor or assist in training new staff, and serve as department resource person.
  • Identify continuous quality improvement issues and assist with the quality assurance program.
  • Respond to off‑hour stand‑by coverage for emergent cardiac catheterization in dedicated cath labs or interventional radiology procedures.
  • Report for call duty within defined time frames and function independently while on stand‑by duty.
  • Apply specialty knowledge, maintain necessary skills, and undertake continuous training and education, including department‑specific requirements.
  • Comply with personal protective equipment requirements for blood, body fluids, disinfectants, radiation, asbestos, and other hazardous substances.
  • Provide age‑appropriate care to patients served within the unit.
  • Perform hemodynamic and dysrhythmia monitoring and documentation of procedures, including right heart cath, left heart cath, coronary angiography, graft angiography, pulmonary angiography, menthegin provocation study, IHSS studies, temporary and permanent pacemakers, intra‑aortic balloon insertion, aortic stenosis studies, valvuloplasties, patent foramen ovale closures, intravascular ultrasounds, and rotablations.
  • Operate and troubleshoot hemodynamic computer systems, including transducer balancing, digital imaging transfer and retrieval systems, and generate patient CDs for hospitals and physicians.
  • Maintain familiarity with the Crash Cart and the CVT/Invasive Cardiovascular Specialist role in CPR and defibrillation during Code Blue situations.
  • Ensure quality control on radiology imaging equipment, perform weekly fluoroscopy checks, protect staff from radiation, handle monthly statistics, and conduct quarterly film badge rotations.
  • Assist the RN with admission processes, continuously monitor, and support physicians and RNs during cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology procedures.
  • Record intra‑cardiac pressures, ECG, and other physiologic data on the hemodynamic recorder; calculate pressures, gradients, valve areas, vascular resistance, shunt abnormalities, and cardiac output, using computer or manual calculation during failures.
  • Operate cardiac output computers, oximeters, and other Cath Lab equipment.
  • Include interventional radiology work in addition to catheterization lab responsibilities.
  • Float to other areas to assist radiology as requested by the supervisor.
  • Assist with radiographic equipment and patient positioning as required.
  • Assist with preparation and operation of MedRad power injector for cardiac angiography.
  • Maintain cine quality program as outlined by the supervisor.
  • Assist with CPR and defibrillation during emergency situations.
  • Manage data with automated cath lab management systems.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Licensure and Certifications - Current registered radiologic technologist license required (CRT and ARRT).
  • Current BCLS and ACLS required.
  • RCIS preferred; must be certified within one year from date of hire.
  • Proof of fluoroscopy permit/license required.
  • Proof of licenses and/or certifications required at time of hire.
  • Education – High School Diploma or GED; graduate of an accredited school of radiologic technology.
  • Proof of educational levels required at time of hire.
  • Knowledge of contrast media (ionic vs. nonionic), coronary artery anatomy, and cardiac physiology relevant to invasive procedures.
  • For a dedicated cath lab, demonstrated proficiency and competency in performing cardiac cath and PCI within six months of hire.
  • Ability to perform general diagnostic and routine fluoroscopic duties on patients of all ages as determined by employer.
  • History of providing efficient, high‑quality service to patients with courtesy, care, and effective coworker interaction.
  • Experience – 2‑5 years in diagnostic imaging and 1‑2 years in cath lab (preferred); minimum one year of experience in a related field.
  • Skills – Excellent verbal, written, and non‑verbal communication; interpersonal and organizational skills; basic computer skills; critical thinking; technical proficiency.
