Work includes using specialized screening equipment and other resources to monitor access to facility and prevent individuals from bringing weapons or other prohibited items into the State House. Responsibilities include observing and reporting potential threats, violations of law, security rules, policies, suspicious behavior, or unsure situations that could affect the safety and security of the individuals visiting or working in the Capitol Area.REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:Monitors individuals who enter the State House or other designated facility in order ensure the safety and security of the Capitol Area. Observes and reports any suspicious or irregular behavior of concern. Monitors designated post or entrance in order to control access to the facility. Operates screening equipment such as X-Ray, metal detectors, and any other necessary equipment in order to ensure prohibited items are not carried into the facility. Searches individual possessions such as handbags, brief cases, and backpacks in order to verify prohibited items are not brought into the facility. Searches mail and packages that are suspected of containing hazardous materials. Searches rooms, common spaces, open areas, and containers for weapons, bombs, or other suspicious devices or items in order to ensure the security of the facility. Participates in continuous training in order to maintain proficiency in performing tasks associated with identification of suspicious items/people/weapons. Writes detailed reports of observed incidents; maintains electronic and manual logs; documents, and seizes prohibited items until released to a law enforcement officer. Receives and maintains chain of custody samples, documentation, and/or suspicious items. Provides information, assistance, direction, and instructions to members of the public, employees, or groups when entering the facility/complex in order to promote safety and order while in the facility/complex. Responds and assists law enforcement in routine and emergency situations. Monitors, observes and checks buildings/grounds for any irregularities; reports suspicious activity to appropriate authorities. Performs traffic control and provides directions for vehicles or pedestrians in order to assist law enforcement. Ensure issued equipment is functioning properly and routine maintenance is performed as set according to set policy and/or guidelines. Stays informed on known or perceived threats against the State, State employees, Legislators, or others who frequent State Facilities.KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, paperwork, terminology, and core operations associated with the Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Capitol Police. Knowledge of general security, screening methodology, tools, and technology used for screening/security. Knowledge of concealment methods, search techniques, and detection methods. Knowledge of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS). Ability to deploy the NIMS and ICS during an emergency response and recovery efforts. Ability to operate applicable specialized equipment upon completion of appropriate training. Ability to stay current and understand, discuss, explain and apply applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedure, paperwork and terminology. Ability to maintain training proficiencies necessary to meet the demands of operational screening needs. Ability to meet enforcement issues with firmness and tact. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Ability to work irregular hours indoors & out under varying work and climate conditions. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships. Ability to maintain proficiency in vehicle operations and perform routine maintenance check of vehicle fluid levels, equipment function and operation. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to write clearly and effectively.
