Job summary

The State of Delaware is seeking an entry-level Capitol Police Recruit to begin training and gain practical knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures while working alongside experienced Enforcement Officers. The role includes patrols, investigations, and public safety duties.

Selected candidates will participate in a Department-approved training program and undergo an online examination as part of the selection process. Strong communication and community engagement are essential.

Qualifications

  • Age at least 20½ years.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Responsibilities

  • Implements appropriate law enforcement action in response to criminal, domestic violence, traffic, miscellaneous complaints and other activities.
  • Investigates suspicious and criminal activity including collecting and preserving physical evidence, interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects and defendants, processing charging documents, executing search and arrest warrants and processing defendants.
  • Performs vehicle and foot patrol of assigned areas.
  • Conducts community policing through informational presentations and educational seminars for other state agencies, schools, the public and community organizations.
  • Provides protective services to judges, victims, jurors, witnesses, state employees and visitors, legislators and the general public as needed.
  • Provides assistance to other law enforcement agencies as back-up or primary response.
  • Takes physical custody of and transports felons and prisoners to appropriate facilities.
  • Present evidence and testimony and prosecutes cases in court.
  • Prepares a variety of reports pertaining to response of incidents, daily activities, investigations and training.

Summary Statement

This is the entry level acquiring a working knowledge of applicable laws, policies, procedures, practices, techniques and equipment by attending the Department approved law enforcement training program and through on-the-job training from other higher level Enforcement Officers.

Essential Functions

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Capitol Police Recruit

  • At least 20 and 1/2 years of age.
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
Conditions of Hire

A satisfactory fingerprint-based background check administered by the Delaware State Police is required as a Condition of Hire. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The State of Delaware Executive Branch participates in the Federal E-Verify system where the State will provide the federal government with each new hires Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. For more information refer to our job seeker resources.

Selection Process

Examination: An online test is required. Applicants will need to retest if the test was taken prior to 3/24/10, or if a failing score was received within the last 120 days.
Test study guides may be obtained by visiting the Department of Human Resources web-site at State of Delaware - Delaware Employment Link. Applicants scheduled for examinations will be required to show photo identification to the exam proctor before taking the exam. All scheduling notices will be sent via email to the applicant. Please check your email for your scheduling testing notice.
