Job description

Job Title: Facilities & Capital Projects Manager

Department: Operations

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Job Location: Remote (HQ)

Position Overview

The Facilities & Capital Projects Manager is responsible for managing facility improvements, infrastructure projects, and capital investments across the company's network of intermodal terminals. This role provides hands‑on leadership throughout the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) lifecycle, helping move projects from initial concept and engineering through procurement, construction, commissioning, and final turnover to Operations.

Working closely with Operations and executive leadership, this position develops project scopes, coordinates engineering and design resources, supports contractor and vendor selection, manages construction activities, and ensures completed projects meet the company's operational, safety, quality, schedule, and financial expectations.

This is a highly hands‑on position requiring significant travel between company terminals to evaluate facility conditions, identify improvement opportunities, coordinate engineers and contractors, and oversee project execution. The ideal candidate is a self‑motivated problem solver who thrives in a fast‑paced industrial/agricultural environment, takes ownership of results, and is equally comfortable developing a project plan, reviewing a contractor proposal, and being in the field ensuring work is executed properly.

Success in this role is measured by delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget while creating measurable improvements in facility reliability, operational efficiency, infrastructure capability, and overall terminal performance.

Work Location & Travel

This position supports the company's network of intermodal terminals and requires extensive travel (approximately 50–75%). Because the role is field‑based, candidates may reside within a reasonable distance of a major airport and should be able to travel efficiently to company facilities as business needs require. Frequent overnight travel should be expected.

  • Lead facility, infrastructure, and capital improvement projects through the full project lifecycle, including planning, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, resource plans, and implementation strategies aligned with operational needs and company priorities.
  • Coordinate engineering and design activities with internal stakeholders and outside engineering firms to ensure practical, cost‑effective, and operationally sound solutions.
  • Review project drawings, specifications, scopes of work, contractor proposals, and equipment recommendations for completeness, constructability, cost, and operational suitability.
  • Lead or support procurement activities, including bid solicitation, proposal evaluation, contractor and vendor selection, equipment sourcing, and commercial comparisons.
  • Coordinate contractors, engineers, millwrights, equipment suppliers, vendors, and internal stakeholders throughout project execution.
  • Oversee construction and field activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and to company standards.
  • Monitor project costs, schedules, risks, change orders, and overall performance, proactively addressing issues that could impact successful project delivery.
  • Coordinate project commissioning, punch‑list completion, documentation, training, and final turnover to Operations.
  • Travel regularly between terminals to assess facility conditions, identify improvement opportunities, monitor active projects, and support field execution.
  • Partner with terminal and Operations leadership to improve facility reliability, equipment performance, traffic flow, safety, capacity, and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct facility and infrastructure assessments and develop practical recommendations for repairs, replacements, upgrades, and future capital investments.
  • Support long‑term facility planning and capital prioritization, identifying opportunities to reduce costs, eliminate operational bottlenecks, improve asset performance, and support company growth.
  • Prepare project updates, budgets, schedules, forecasts, and recommendations for leadership while promoting standardized engineering, construction, and facility best practices across the terminal network.

Key Success Measures

  • Capital projects completed safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Improved facility reliability and overall asset condition.
  • Increased terminal efficiency and throughput.
  • Reduction in operational bottlenecks and equipment downtime.
  • Improved safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Successful execution of multi‑site infrastructure projects.
  • Effective contractor performance and project quality.
  • Cost savings and measurable operational improvements.
  • Standardization of facility and infrastructure practices across the terminal network.

Education and Experience Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Industrial Technology, Operations Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • 5+ years of experience managing industrial facilities, construction, infrastructure, maintenance, or capital improvement projects.
  • Experience supporting or managing projects through the EPC lifecycle, including engineering/design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Experience developing and managing project scopes, budgets, schedules, contractors, vendors, and multiple concurrent projects.
  • Ability to review and understand engineering drawings, construction documents, equipment specifications, proposals, and scopes of work.
  • Working knowledge of industrial facilities, mechanical systems, utilities, heavy equipment, civil infrastructure, and/or bulk material handling systems.
  • Experience in agriculture, rail/intermodal, manufacturing, industrial processing, bulk material handling, terminal operations, or industrial construction is strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills with the ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and take ownership of projects from concept through completion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with project management software and/or CMMS platforms is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively (50–75%).

Additional Requirements

  • Must wear approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required, including but not limited to steel/composite‑toe, slip‑resistant work shoes, reflective vest, etc.
