Job summary

3M is seeking a Capital Project Engineer for our On-site Knoxville, IA site. You will lead capital project planning and execution, manage FEL studies, schedules, budgets, and resources to ensure delivery.

You will develop competitive bidding strategies, define equipment performance requirements, and maintain cost control with forecasting and progress tracking. Travel up to 25% may be required and relocation may be authorized.

Qualifications

  • Associate or technical diploma + 5 years in engineering, manufacturing, or project management.
  • Bachelor’s degree + 3 years in engineering, manufacturing, or project management.
  • PMP certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, MS Project, SAP, SolidWorks, NX or similar systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and execution of assigned capital projects, managing FEL studies, schedules, budgets, construction activities, and resources.
  • Develop and implement competitive bidding strategies, including bid evaluation and contractor selection.
  • Define equipment performance requirements and design criteria for safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
  • Establish and maintain robust schedule and cost control processes, including forecasting and progress tracking.
  • Foster strong communication and collaboration with project teams, site leadership, contractors, and stakeholders at all phases.
  • Ensure compliance with codes, standards, guidelines, and company requirements.

Capital Project Engineer

The Impact you’ll make

As a Capital Project Engineer you will:

  • Lead the planning and execution of assigned capital projects by managing front‑end loading (FEL) studies, project schedules, budgets, construction activities, and resources to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Develop and implement competitive bidding strategies, including bid evaluation and contractor selection, to ensure cost‑effective and high‑quality project results.
  • Define equipment performance requirements and engineering design criteria to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
  • Establish and maintain robust schedule and cost control processes, including forecasting, progress tracking, variance analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Foster strong communication and collaboration with project teams, site leadership, contractors, and stakeholders throughout all phases of project execution.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, guidelines, and company requirements so that all designs and project activities meet regulatory, safety, and operational expectations.
Your skills and expertise

Minimum qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or Technical Diploma in an engineering or science discipline (verified prior to start) + five years of experience in engineering, manufacturing, and/or project management in a private, public, government or military environment.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree or higher in an engineering or science discipline (verified prior to start) + three years of experience in the same areas.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed:

  • Minimum three years of experience in chemical manufacturing, industrial operations, or other process‑based industries.
  • Prior experience with coating, drying and curing, compounding and mixing, material handling, slitting, automation, and packaging systems.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex, cross‑functional capital projects from concept through final implementation.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with engineering design and project management tools such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, SAP, SolidWorks, NX or similar systems.

Compensation and benefits

Expected compensation range: $124,127 - $151,710 (base pay plus variable incentive pay if eligible). The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
