Job summary

Oklahoma Western Federal Public Defender in Oklahoma City seeks an Assistant Federal Public Defender (AFPD) in the Capital Habeas Unit. The CHU handles federal habeas matters for indigent death-sentenced prisoners across Oklahoma, including related clemency proceedings.

The attorney will identify legal claims, draft court filings, and supervise defense team members. Hearings and oral arguments may be required. Strong research and writing skills and a client-centered approach are essential.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice and in good standing before the highest court of a state.
• At least five years of practice experience (preferably in post-conviction proceedings or complex civil litigation).
• In-office, rather than remote, employment heavily preferred.

Responsibilities

• Identify and develop legal claims for capital or criminal defense.
• Draft court filings and prepare motions and other pleadings.
• Direct and supervise work of defense team members per ABA Guidelines.
• Represent clients in hearings and oral arguments as required.
