Job summary

Sharp HealthCare is seeking a driver to transport passengers and delivery items between facilities using a hospital vehicle in San Diego, CA.

Must have a CA DMV license; a High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred, with Passenger Transportation Endorsement (P) preferred. Prior experience in transportation and working with people is advantageous. Expect a structured schedule with no weekends and no on-call duties, in a unionized environment.

Qualifications

• Driver's license issued by the CA Department of Motor Vehicles is required.

Responsibilities

• Transporting passengers and delivering property in a hospital vehicle to Sharp HealthCare facilities.
• Assists passengers in and out of vehicles using safety precautions and ensures seat belts are worn.
• Loads and secures wheelchairs or other mobility devices as needed.
• Performs pre-trip safety checks and reports any mechanical issues.
• Maintains courteous, respectful interactions with passengers and staff.

Shift Start Time: 8 AM Shift End Time: 4 PM AWS Hours Requirement: 8/40 - 8 Hour Shift Additional Shift Information: Weekend Requirements: No Weekends On-Call Required: No Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum): $25.000 - $27.640 - $30.490

This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with SEIU-UHW. As part of the terms of employment, employees in this role are required to join the union within 31 days of hire and remain a member (e.g. dues paying, fee paying, religious exception contributor) for the duration of the collective bargaining agreement. This position was originally posted to ratified SEIU members from 08/13/26 – 08/21/26. The position is now available to be filled by internal candidates that are not members of the ratified Bargaining Unit or External candidates to Sharp.

Essential Functions

• Communication and teamwork Maintains courteous and considerate relations with passengers and other staff members. Offers praise in appreciation of the work of others. Accepts interpersonal differences and respects the values and opinions of others. Wears clean, pressed uniform and name badge.
• Customer service Attends staff meeting and driver training sessions. Uses effective skills in dealing with disabled and difficult passengers. Displays role model behavior which passengers can imitate. Demonstrates assertive respectful behavior.
• Delivery Picks up and delivers items as directed. Follows department protocol for pick up/delivery. Ensures chain of custody for item(s) as directed.
• Patient transport Assists passengers in and out of vehicles using safety precautions. Assures that seat belts are always used. Properly loads and secures wheelchairs or other mobility devices. Assures there is no smoking in vehicle. Functions effectively in stressful situations. Immediately reports any passenger issues or problems to supervisor.
• Does not utilize cell phones while driving. Personal cell phones may only be used during scheduled breaks.
• Vehicle maintenance Performs pre-trip safety inspection on assigned vehicle. Completes daily vehicle maintenance and safety inspection report. Practices safe, defensive driving, with no at fault accidents, moving or parking violations or unsafe driving complaints. Immediately reports or corrects any mechanical problem with vehicle to Supervisor. Washes, cleans and fuels vehicle as needed. Consistently records mileage and/or other essential trip information.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of wheelchair equipment and securement.
