Job summary

Brown University seeks a Public Safety Officer to patrol campus posts, provide non-criminal services at events, and support campus safety operations. The role requires engaging with students, staff, and visitors to maintain a secure environment and respond to emergencies.

The position demands strong communication, reporting, and teamwork. Training includes Use of Force policy; a 12-month probationary period applies, with background checks and education verification required.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma/GED.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Must pass a background investigation.
• Candidates must not have any felony convictions or serious misdemeanor convictions.
• Must pass a psychological examination administered by the University, and a physical examination.
• Must be able to engage in security functions including walking patrols and door checks to ensure security.
• Must be able to perform rescue operations which may involve lifting or carrying heavy objects.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, faculty and the community.
• Must communicate with sensitivity and tact while maintaining confidentiality.
• Must be able to prepare reports, including sketches with proper grammar.
• Basic computer skills required.
• Capable of prioritizing tasks and handling a multiphasic position.
• Must complete Public Safety Officer training program, including Use of Force policy.
• Must complete a 12-month probationary period.
• Offers contingent upon consent to criminal background screening and education verification.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned post on campus and take action on non-criminal situations.
• Provide non-criminal services and assist with campus events.
• Write non-criminal reports and witness statements.
• Testify in university hearings or courts when required.
• Assist Campus Police Officer when called upon.
• Communicate with the department and community to identify issues.
• Report hazardous conditions and secure buildings; admit authorized people; conduct building patrols; assist guests and Brown community.
• Perform rescue functions in emergencies and complete required paperwork.
