Job summary

California State University, East Bay is seeking a Groundsworker to maintain the campus grounds, ensuring a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for staff, faculty and students on-site in Hayward.

The role involves planting, cultivating, fertilizing, spraying, and maintaining trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, plus related tasks and possible minor repairs on power equipment. A valid California driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work.
• Ability to recognize common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California.
• Perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification.
• Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

• Turf Area Maintenance: Daily litter pick-up; Edge along sidewalks; Trim and mowing edges; Hand trimming around trees and obstacles.
• Shrub and Flower Bed Maintenance: Daily litter pick-up; Weed beds; Prune shrubs and small trees; Plant annuals and perennials.
• Irrigation Systems Maintenance: Trim around sprinkler heads; Repair sprinkler heads; Report malfunctions.
• Other Duties: Assist with landscape upgrades; Report hazards to manager; May work after hours for emergencies.
