Job summary

IDEA Public Schools is seeking a Bus Driver Mechanic (CBDM) to diagnose and repair the campus bus fleet, ensuring safe operation and compliance with district, state and federal standards. The CBDM will also drive a school bus and supervise maintenance activities to keep the fleet ready for daily transportation.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year as a Diesel Mechanic.

Job Overview

The Bus Driver Mechanic (CBDM) will provide basic level solutions of repairs and/or diagnose to the campus bus fleet to ensure the availability of units to be in safe operating condition meeting district, state and federal requirements and criteria with the guidance of the District Mechanic. The CBDM will also drive a school bus while ensuring the entire campus fleet is always maintained in a safe operating condition.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the bus fleet is in good working condition and meets district, state, and federal requirements.
  • Ensure the campus fleet is operational before transporting students.
  • Seek advice from the District Mechanic for any minor repairs on school buses.
  • Maintain accurate records of operation work orders.
  • Maintain the fleet in a safe operating condition while achieving a 7% savings on maintenance cost over the previous year.
  • Operate within the budget parameters set by the Campus Transportation Manager.
  • Work with the Transportation Manager and District Mechanic to keep an accurate inventory of all parts at the campus level.
  • Maintain continuous education and upgrades in diesel engines provided by your District Mechanic.
  • Lead the team and hold them accountable for their work performance.
  • Communicate openly with the Transportation Manager and the District Mechanic.
  • Accept positive and negative feedback regarding proper handling of school buses.
  • Prioritize multiple tasks and adapt to changing environments.
  • Drive a school bus safely in accordance with scheduled times.
  • Maintain proper discipline of students during transport.
  • Establish daily safety and operational inspection of the assigned vehicle.
  • Oversee the loading and unloading of students, ensuring safety belts are fastened.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year as a Diesel Mechanic (preferred).
  • License or Certification: Valid Class A or B Driver’s License with "P" and "S" endorsements, DOT Physical Examination, and State Region Certification.

Knowledge & Skills
  • One (1) year of experience within the diesel or automotive industry.
  • Skill to execute the following mechanic duties:
    • PM inspections
    • Change lights
    • Basic electrical diagnostics, Power/Ground 2 wire circuits
    • Knowledge of proper fluid levels
    • Oil changes without supervision
    • Belts/hoses replacement
    • Battery replacement
    • Replace synovia parts
    • Computer literate (Service Finder, email, excel)
    • Minor repairs: alternators, coolant reservoirs, brakes
    • Window tinting (can be trained on the job)
    • Seat repairs (patch work, cover and foam replacement)
  • And more as required by the job.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Hourly rate ranging between $25.25 for 0 years of experience and $29.00.
  • Eligible for a performance bonus based on team performance and goal attainment.
  • Comprehensive benefits plan covering the majority of the employee premium for the base medical plan and subsidizing most costs for a spouse/domestic partner and children.
  • Paid Family Leave: up to 8 weeks for birth or adoption of a child.
  • Tuition Reimbursement: up to 50% of tuition, up to $5,250 per year subject to manager discretion.
