Job description

Immediately become an integral part in the development of the next generation, become a summer hero who mentors and guides young people. Camp will run from June 2nd - August 8th with training being held at Camp Spirit on May 17th. Available hours between 7am - 6pm.

At camp, you will supervise 10-12 children and engage in decision-making, behavior management, and living ethics—essential leadership skills for today. Communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and contribution are developed and practiced at camp; these skills can enhance your resume and attract employers' attention.

Position Summary: This role supports the YMCA's mission by providing direction in the classroom, implementing program curriculum, and ensuring a quality experience that promotes achievement and belonging for youth and their families.

Essential Functions:

  1. Implement purposeful programming and curriculum, prepared in advance of each activity.
  2. Supervise children and all activities, including ADA accommodations where appropriate, following all procedures and standards.
  3. Guide children in developmentally appropriate play and routines.
  4. Observe and evaluate each child's needs to provide feedback and create purposeful activities.
  5. Provide positive feedback to prevent and redirect challenging behaviors.
  6. Build positive relationships, conduct parent conferences, and maintain effective communication with parents, engaging them as volunteers and connecting them to the YMCA.
  7. Maintain program site and equipment in accordance with standards.
  8. Ensure a safe, healthy environment, knowledgeable of safety/emergency procedures, and practice infection control.
  9. Maintain required program records and trainings to comply with licensing and YMCA policies.
  10. Participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and training.
  11. Communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers for program improvement.
  12. Report suspected abuse per PA Child Protective Services Law and YMCA policy.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

As per Department of Human Services, an Assistant Group Supervisor shall have one of the following qualifications:

  1. A high school diploma or GED and 30 college credits in early childhood education, child development, special education, or human services.
  2. A high school diploma or GED, including 600+ hours of secondary training described in section 3270.31(c).
  3. A high school diploma or GED, 15 college credits in relevant fields, and 1 year of experience with children.
  4. A high school diploma or GED and completion of a post-secondary training curriculum in relevant fields.
  5. A high school diploma or GED and 2 years of documented experience with children.

Additionally, candidates must:

  1. Obtain State Police, Child Abuse, NSOR, FBI clearances, a negative TB test, and a physical.
  2. Complete Mandated Reporter training.
  3. Obtain Pediatric First Aid/CPR and AED certifications.

Physical Demands:

  • Light exertion up to 20 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Body position and movement requirements vary, including stationary, reaching, moving, pulling, pushing, and lifting.
  • Visual and auditory requirements include good vision and hearing for communication and safety.
  • Exposure to outdoor elements and potential contact with bodily fluids/blood.
