Job summary

OMSI's Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray in Newport, Oregon seeks a Camp Maintenance Technician to care for camp buildings, grounds, and equipment. You will respond to hazards, perform repairs, and coordinate with the Camp Gray Manager to maintain a safe, educational environment.

The role includes working on weekends/holidays/evenings, on-site housing available, and requires experience with electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other mechanical systems.

Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Understand electrical, mechanical, carpentry and PPE procedures.
  • Familiarity with OSHA compliance and safety protocols.
  • Ability to read and understand as-built drawings, equipment schematics, as well as equipment manual contents.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical, plumbing, appliance, and HVAC issues.
  • Familiarity with tools commonly found in small to medium commercial maintenance shops.
  • 2 years of experience with increasing responsibility in commercial/industrial setting.
  • Experience creating and updating maintenance and safety records in a shareable digital format.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care, repair, and maintenance of camp buildings, grounds, and equipment at the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray in Newport, Oregon.
  • Mitigate hazards to ensure a healthy and safe program for all participants.
  • Work under the Camp Gray Manager to support a positive education environment.
  • Answer on-call duties and work some weekends, holidays, and/or evenings.
  • Onsite living accommodations are available.

Job description

The Camp Maintenance Technician is an essential community member of passionate educators and learners. To support a positive work and education environment, the Camp Maintenance Technician, working under the direction of the Camp Gray Manager, provides effective care, repair, and maintenance of camp buildings, grounds, and equipment at the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray in Newport, Oregon.

A successful candidate recognizes, mitigates, and responds to hazards to ensure a healthy and safe program for all participants and provides general maintenance, including but not limited to carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and gas/electric appliances and systems for all camp buildings including staff housing. Candidates must have, but not limited to:
  • Strong mechanical aptitude;
  • Understanding of electrical, mechanical, carpentry and/or PPE procedures;
  • Familiarity with OSHA compliance and safety protocols;
  • Ability to read and understand, as-built drawings, equipment schematics, as well as equipment manual contents.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical, plumbing, appliance, and HVAC issues;
  • Familiarity with tools commonly found in small to medium commercial maintenance shops.
  • 2 years of experience-with increasing responsibility-with the following:
    • Foundational knowledge and experience working in a commercial or industrial setting, with an emphasis on electrical, plumbing, site improvements, and preventative maintenance;
    • Demonstrated experience working independently and safely with mechanical systems;
    • Familiarity with gas-based appliances;
    • Familiarity with HVAC systems;
    • Familiarity with basic vehicle maintenance;
    • Prior experience creating and updating maintenance and safety records in a shareable digital format.
Additionally, candidates must:
  • Pass pre-employment checks, such as criminal background checks (may require fingerprinting background checks based on school district requirements), reference checks, and American Camp Association (ACA) background checks (& on an annual basis);
  • Have a valid driver's license, including meeting OMSI's driving standards, which requires completing a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.

This position requires working onsite at the camp location in Newport, OR, working on some weekends, holidays, and/or evenings, and requires 24-hour on-call duties for critical systems. Onsite living accommodations are available.
