Job summary

Montana Council, Scouting America is seeking an experienced Camp Director for Camp Melita Island on Flathead Lake, MT. You will lead a unique mix of land- and water-based programs and manage staff, volunteers, and units.

The role is in-person mid-June to early August with pre-season planning possible virtually. Housing is provided; NC Camping School training is paid for by the Council. Reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must meet Scouting America and Montana Council membership registration requirements.
• Must successfully complete National Camping School – Long-Term Training.
• Must be able to live and work on-site for the summer camp season.
• Must be available for pre-season planning virtually (evenings/weekends).
• Must communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

Job description

Montana Council, Scouting America, is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Camp Director to lead the operation of Camp Melita Island, a unique Scouts BSA summer camp located on Flathead Lake in northwest Montana.Melita Island offers an exceptional combination of land- and water-based programming. Aquatic activities include large- and small-boat sailing, water sports, paddle craft, swimming, and inflatable obstacles. Land-based programs include archery, fine arts, Scoutcraft, NEST, and other activities, while the Advanced Camper Experience (ACE) provides additional opportunities for older Scouts seeking adventure both on and off the island.

Montana Council's summer camp program is built around creating a safe, fun, and meaningful experience for Scouts, adult leaders, and staff. The Camp Director is the senior on-site leader responsible for bringing that experience together.

The Camp Director provides overall supervision and leadership for the camp operation, working closely with the Montana Council, camp leadership team, department directors, seasonal staff, volunteers, and participating units. This position requires an individual who is an effective communicator, organized planner, strong personnel manager, and confident decision-maker who can adapt to the unique challenges of operating a summer camp on an island.

This position is in-person from mid-June - early-August and requires pre-season planning which can be done virtually. This can include evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must meet the membership registration, background-check, and other employment requirements of Scouting America and Montana Council.
• Must successfully complete National Camping School – Long-Term (Resident) Camp Director training. Montana Council will pay for required National Camping School training. Scouting America identifies this training as required for resident-camp leadership and covers areas including NCAP, employment management and staff training, business and fiscal management, health and wellness, and cultural competencies.
• Must be able to live and work on-site for the duration of the summer camp season.

• Must be available for pre-season planning virtually including some evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by camp operations.
• Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
• Must be able to understand and follow policies, procedures, instructions, and training materials.
• Must have the physical ability to move throughout camp and work in a variety of outdoor and environmental conditions.
• Must be able to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment in a dynamic camp environment.
• Must be willing and able to work as part of a team and provide leadership to a diverse seasonal staff.
