YMCA of Upper Palmetto in Blacksburg, SC seeks a Cabin Counselor Supervisor to monitor daily performance, train staff, and ensure safe, engaging experiences for male campers. You will be present in cabin areas, interact with campers and staff at meals, programs, and other times, and provide guidance when rules aren’t followed.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21+ years old or have completed at least two years of college.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • Attend all pre-camp training, retreats, and opening training session.
  • Possess leadership qualities and ability to use sound judgment.
  • Good health, enthusiasm, maturity, character, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Must be able to endure hot temperatures and daily physical activity.

  • Observe, correct and evaluate male staff interactions with campers.
  • Greet and accommodate parents on Opening day and visit Health Center if needed.
  • Plan and supervise campers and staff during bridge sessions and OD duties.
  • Identify cabin supply needs and assist other program staff as needed.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

To assess cabin counselor performance daily to assure standards are maintained. Train and develop staff members, providing feedback that allows for the continual growth and development of staff. Ensure that male campers and staff are physically and emotionally safe at camp, while also having fun.

  • Be present in the cabin areas on a daily basis.
  • Interact with campers and staff on a daily basis – at meals, evening programs, other program times, etc.
  • Conduct face checks to ensure cabins report promptly and all counselors and campers are present.
  • Provide direction to both staff and campers who are not following rules or contractual obligations.
  • Manage supervision during shower and devotional times.
  • Coordinate and supervise cabin night activity.
  • Manage “area duty” responsibilities of male staff members.
  • Collect and sort laundry after bridge weekends for all male campers and staff members.
  • Provide feedback that allows for effective growth and development of male staff members.
  • Conduct regular area meetings.
  • Lend support to male staff members after lights out in the appropriate cabin areas.
  • Observe, correct and evaluate male staff members concerning their interactions and leadership with campers.
  • Complete written evaluations of staff mid-season and at the end of the season to be submitted to the camp director. Verbally discuss the evaluations with each staff member.
  • Conduct cabin cleanliness checks on Opening and Closing Day of each session.
  • Make suggested camp counselor cabin assignments to the appropriate “camp” director.
  • Ensure that male campers and staff are physically and emotionally safe, while also having fun at Camp Cherokee.
  • Greet and accommodate parents as needed on Opening day.
  • Visit any camper or male staff member that may be in the Health Center.
  • Check e-mails and voicemails daily, communicate directly with parents concerning their camper(s).
  • Contact parents of all first year campers by Wednesday of each session.
  • Manage lost and found items and return them to their appropriate owner.
  • Assist other program staff when needed.
  • Opening/ Closing Day Responsibilities
  • Assist Evening Program Director
  • Plan and supervise campers and staff during “bridge” sessions.
  • Actively assist in “OD” responsibilities.
  • Select an Honor Cabin at the end of each session; present the honor creatively at closing banquet.
  • Deliver pre-sorted mail to cabins daily.
  • Identify and manage cabin supply needs.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed by the camp director team.
Qualifications:
  • Must be 21 years of age or have completed at least two years of college.
  • Must be certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Must attend all pre-camp training, retreats, and opening training session.
  • Possess leadership qualities and ability to use sound judgment.
  • Good health, enthusiasm, individual maturity, moral character, team qualities, and communication skills.
  • Possess interest in the development of children.
  • Must be able to endure hot temperatures, physical exertion, manual labor, behavioral conflicts, and must be able to walk, run, and swim every day.
  • Physical requirements of the Boys Camp Director at Camp Cherokee include endurance during prolonged activities, bending, stooping and lifting. Other physical aspects include the ability to observe, manage and evaluate both staff members and campers. Ensure that staff and camper morale are always in a positive manner.
