Job summary

BWX Technologies, Inc. in Lynchburg, VA is seeking a CAM Programmer / CNC Machinist to translate SolidWorks models into Mastercam toolpaths, set up and run CNC mills and lathes, and produce precision components for rapid prototypes and low-volume builds.

Onsite at BWXT Advanced Technologies Office; requires an associate degree with 2 years machining experience or a high school diploma plus 6 years’ experience, plus strong GD&T and drawing interpretation. U.S.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a technical field with 2 years of machining experience or a high school diploma with 6 years of machining experience.
  • Proficient in CAM programming; Mastercam preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of machining fundamentals: tooling, workholding, setup, and optimization.
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T with tight tolerances.
  • Proven problem-solving skills and ownership in a fast-paced prototyping environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to convey clear information.
  • Strong team player capable of working with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Program, edit, and optimize Mastercam toolpaths from SolidWorks models and drawings.
  • Set up and operate CNC mills and lathes (3–5 axis preferred).
  • Interpret drawings and GD&T; select speeds and feeds for aluminum, steels, plastics.
  • Perform prove-outs and first-article runs; drive continuous process improvements.
  • Collaborate with engineering and assembly on DFM/DFX and manufacturability.
  • Perform in-process inspections using calipers, micrometers, height gauges; document results.
  • Maintain programs, posts, and revision control; keep workspace clean and safe.

Position Overview

As our CAM Programmer / CNC Machinist, you will serve as a key contributor within our Prototyping & Assembly Operations team. In this role, you will translate SolidWorks models into efficient Mastercam toolpaths, set up and run CNC equipment, and produce precision components for rapid prototypes and low volume builds.

Location

Onsite in Lynchburg, Virginia at the Advanced Technologies Office.

Your Day to Day as a CAM Programmer / CNC Machinist
  • Program, edit, and optimize Mastercam toolpaths from SolidWorks 3D models and drawings.
  • Set up and operate CNC mills and lathes (3–5 axis preferred), including workholding design, tool selection, and offsets.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T requirements; select appropriate speeds and feeds for a wide range of materials including aluminum, steels, and plastics.
  • Perform prove ‑ outs and first ‑ article runs; drive continuous process improvements to reduce cycle time, minimize scrap, and enhance overall machining efficiency.
  • Collaborate with engineering and assembly to advise on DFM/DFX and manufacturability.
  • Perform in ‑ process inspections using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other precision measurement tools; accurately document results.
  • Maintain programs, posts, and revision control; keep a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
  • Assist with routine machine maintenance and troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of an associate degree in a technical field plus two (2) years of professional machining experience OR a high school diploma / equivalent plus six (6) years of professional machining experience (CNC programming + hands on operation) is required.
  • Must be proficient in CAM programming, Mastercam preferred.
  • Must have strong knowledge of machining fundamentals: tooling, workholding, setup, and optimization.
  • Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T; comfortable working with tight tolerances.
  • Must have proven problem-solving skills and ownership in a fast‑paced prototyping environment.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear, concise, and accurate information.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including customers and suppliers.
  • Must be able to thrive in a fast‑paced team environment while also working independently when required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., NIMS Machining, Mastercam Certification, SolidWorks CSWA/CSWP) are preferred.
  • Experience with multi axis programming (4/5 axis) and post processor customization.
  • Familiarity with quick turn prototyping/R&D workflows and short lead times.
  • Exposure to CMM or advanced metrology; ISO or AS quality environments.
  • Basic CNC maintenance and troubleshooting.

Pay: $60,000.00- $90,000.00

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $60,000.00 and $90,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at‑will’, unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
