Job Description and Duties

Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Equipment Operator II operates heavy equipment and performs a variety of tasks related to highway maintenance. Responsibilities include:

• Operating heavy equipment such as pavers, mowing machines, ditch cleaning equipment, and specialty tools.
• Executing tasks such as paving, mowing, ditch cleaning, dig outs, brush removal, pavement patching, and repair of guide markers, signs, fences, guardrails.
• Cleaning culverts, managing traffic control, litter pickup, and maintenance of roadside rest areas.
• Conducting graffiti removal and minor repairs to signs and markers.
• Working individually or as part of a crew, sometimes as a dedicated operator on specialty equipment.
• Cooperating with Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor or Leadworker when necessary.
• Performing overtime, irregular shifts, nights, holidays, weekends, and emergency call‑outs.

Working Conditions

Position located at 5660 Reseda Blvd, Tarzana, CA.

Employees may be exposed to high‑speed traffic, loud noise, dust, chemicals, extreme weather, and heights. The role includes rotating and irregular shifts, overtime, emergency work, and occasional after‑hour call‑outs.

Safety requirements include appropriate footwear, safety garments, long pants, hard hats, gloves, hearing protection and other required gear.
