Job summary

Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc (AMA) seeks a part-time CAD Model Design Intern to support the Flight Dynamics Research Facility at NASA Langley Research Center. The CAD Model Design Intern will develop free flight and forced oscillation model designs for rapid prototype fabrication and validation for trajectory analysis.

Responsibilities include creating models in .igs or .stp, designing oscillation configurations with mounting interfaces at reference points, and enabling a movable center

Qualifications

• Undergraduate or Graduate student in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
• Minimum of 2 years' CAD modeling experience or 2 semesters CAD coursework.
• Experience with .igs or .stp and native CAD formats.

Responsibilities

• Develop CAD models in .igs/.stp and native CAD formats.
• Create CAD models for oscillation configurations with mounting interfaces.
• Design geometry for thermal inset fasteners and accurate mounting.
• Create CAD solid models for wind tunnel components using 3D printing methods.
• Support movable center of gravity in designs.

Job Description:

Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc (AMA) is seeking a part-time intern to support the Flight Dynamics Research Facility at NASA Langley Research Center. The CAD Model Design Intern will support the Entry Systems Modeling project to develop free flight and forced oscillation model design for rapid prototype fabrication. Project activities include but are not limited to, forced oscillation and free flight tests to investigate the dynamic stability of blunt entry vehicles. The models to be tested include variations of geometries. Forced oscillation testing and free flight testing will provide static and dynamic stability data for the geometries tested as well as free flight dynamics which will serve as validation data for trajectory simulation analysis.

Responsibilities

• Develop models in in the form of .igs or .stp, as well as the native CAD format used for the design work
• Develop CAD models for oscillation configurations that include location of mounting interface at specified reference points,
• Design geometry to accommodate thermal inset fasteners for accurate and reliable mounting to the balance sting
• Create CAD solid models of free flight wind tunnel models using FDM 3D printing methods or similar.
• Design the models to enable a movable center of gravity

Requirements

• Undergraduate or Graduate student with a degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in developing CAD models or 2 semesters of relevant CAD course work
• Experience with .igs or .stp, as well as the native CAD format
• Ability to work onsite at NASA Langley

This is an onsite position at NASA Langley Research Center and requires U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residence.
