Job description

CAD Designer/Drafter (Level II) – Baytown, TX
We are seeking an experienced CAD Designer/Drafter II to join our team onsite in Baytown, TX. In this role, you will develop and maintain 2D and 3D CAD drawings for equipment and experiments ranging from benchtop to pilot-scale process research and application studies across global research sites. The position requires proficiency in Autodesk products and other CAD tools, strong organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines. This role is critical to supporting an increased workload driven by major projects through 2027.
Primary Job Functions:

  • Comply with all safety, health, and environmental policies and practices.
  • Develop and maintain 2D and 3D CAD drawings (e.g., PFDs, P&IDs, one-lines, general layouts, plans, sections, and details) using Autodesk products and other CAD software.
  • Transform complex rough product designs into accurate working documents.
  • Generate computer-based drawings, isometrics, details, plans, and bills of materials.
  • Revise drawings based on instructions from engineers and operations, managing changes through the Management of Change (MOC) system.
  • Maintain and update Autodesk Vault as the primary technical documentation repository, ensuring accurate technical history.
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate across multiple engineering disciplines and project teams.
  • Estimate workload and establish completion dates for assigned tasks.
  • Ensure timely communication to stakeholders regarding progress, issues, and discipline activities.

Job Requirements:
  • Associate degree in Drafting or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or equivalent job experience.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of relevant CAD design experience.
  • Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software (Autodesk products required; experience with AutoCAD and Vault preferred).
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and frequent changes in priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Primary responsibilities will be updating 2D drawings (P&IDs, layout drawings, title blocks), redlining, field walkdowns, and documentation standardization across sites.
  • Top 3 work priorities: P&ID development, layout updates, and electrical one-lines.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Experience:
  • Experience with process industry drawings (PFDs, P&IDs, general layouts).
  • Familiarity with document control systems and database administration.
  • Experience with 3D scanning and digital workflow improvements.
  • Knowledge of project planning and execution processes.
  • Experience in training, mentoring, and working across multiple interfaces.
  • Exposure to safety standards and SHE advocacy in engineering environments.

Key Requirements
  • Minimum 3–5 years stated in the role description, but 5+ years is preferred based on recent successful hires.
  • Autodesk products (AutoCAD, Autodesk Vault, Inventor) preferred; other CAD tools (SolidWorks, Navisworks) are acceptable as skills are transferable.
  • Oil & gas preferred but not a dealbreaker; P&ID and electrical drawing experience are key.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and self-organization — the team of 6 CAD designers is largely self-directed.
  • Not looking for candidates focused primarily on 3D modeling/scanning, as that is not the core of the work.

Other:
  • Pay Rate: $40-48/hour (DOE)
  • Location: Baytown, TX (onsite)
  • Duration: 1-year rolling contract
  • Candidate should be based in Baytown, TX, working onsite Mon-Fri (40 hrs./wk.)
  • Interview Process:
    • Round 1: 30-minute phone screen (communication, fit).
    • Round 2: Zoom interview with two interviewers (behavioral and technical).
    • Target Start Date: Ideally November 9th, with some flexibility if needed.
