Position Overview

The Staff Attorney (Unaccompanied Children Program) provides direct legal representation to clients served by the St. Frances Cabrini Center for Legal Assistance in immigration matters. Responsibilities include representing clients before USCIS, immigration courts, and other agencies, as well as community outreach, legal education, and supervising interns and caseworkers. The role reports to the Senior Attorney, Managing Attorney, or Associate Legal Director and collaborates with the legal team.

Key Responsibilities

1. Legal Assistance
   • Provide legal representation before USCIS, immigration courts, and agencies on matters like family petitions, asylum, removal defense, and naturalization.
   • Conduct legal intake, interviews, draft petitions, perform legal research, and prepare clients for interviews and hearings.
2. Case Management
   • Maintain case files, track case status, and stay updated on immigration policies.
3. Meetings
   • Participate in team meetings, community events, and advocacy groups as required.
4. Contract and Compliance
   • Ensure compliance with grant and contract requirements, provide data and reports, and participate in trainings.
5. Outreach and Education
   • Participate in community legal education and outreach, especially in Spanish and English, focusing on immigration issues.
6. Supervision
   • Supervise legal assistants, paralegals, and interns.
7. Additional Duties
   • Assist with meetings, community partners, coalition activities, and special events as assigned.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in Texas or eligible to take the bar exam within one year of employment.
• Bilingual in Spanish and English.
