Job description

cable manufacturing technician - 2nd and 3rd shifts available

Spherion VT is seeking detail-oriented Specialty Cable Manufacturing Technician to join our client's production team in Shelburne, Vermont. There are a variety of open positions available. You have the opportunity to operate specialized high-temperature extrusion machinery to apply PTFE/TFE fluoropolymer insulations and produce high-frequency Low Loss (LL) cables for critical aerospace and defense applications. Additionally, you may run high-voltage spark testing equipment to verify insulation integrity and ensure every reel of cable meets strict quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities
  • Operate High-Temp Extrusion Equipment: Set up, monitor, and adjust specialized extrusion lines applying TFE/PTFE and expanded fluoropolymer coatings to wire conductors.
  • Process Low-Loss Cable: Produce high-frequency, low-attenuation cables, maintaining precise control over wall thickness, concentricity, and microscopic expanded-air inner layers.
  • Conduct Spark Testing & QA: Run finished cable through high-voltage spark test units to detect insulation flaws, logging defect locations and stopping lines when quality limits are exceeded.
  • Perform In-Process Quality Checks: Read blueprints and shop floor traveler documentation to verify wire gauges, outer diameters, and electrical properties using micrometers and calipers.
  • Maintain Equipment & Safety Protocols: Perform routine operator-level machine cleanup, spool changes, and tool setups while strictly adhering to plant safety and ESD (electrostatic discharge) standards.

Working hours: 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Skills
  • Prior experience in wire and cable manufacturing, specifically with fluoropolymer (TFE/PTFE, FEP, PFA) extrusion techniques.
  • Familiarity with high-voltage inline spark testing procedures and quality control standards (e.g., MIL-SPEC or AS9100).
  • Experience handling high-frequency coaxial or Low-Loss aerospace cable products.
Education

High School

Experience

1-4 years

Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent vocational training.
  • Minimum 1?2 years of experience operating machinery in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to use basic hand tools and precision measuring devices (e.g., calipers, micrometers).
  • Basic computer literacy and math skills for entering quality test data, reading specs, and tracking job travelers.
  • Excellent visual acuity, color vision (for wire color coding), and hand-eye coordination for handling fine wires and spools.
