Job summary

Upshur County Schools seeks a coach for Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School for the 2026-2027 season. The successful applicant will teach basic sport skills, promote sportsmanship, and enforce WVSSAC rules and district policies.

Applicants must hold a WV teaching certificate or WVDE permit, or a high school diploma/GED. Non-teaching coaches must complete WVSSAC training. Salary follows the Upshur County coaching salary scale.

Qualifications

• Must hold a WV teaching certificate, WVDE permit or substitute permit.
• Coaches who are not professional teachers must complete WVSSAC Training & Certification.
• ADA compliance and district policies apply.

Responsibilities

• Communicates with educational staff, parents, students, and others to support players.
• Develops rapport with coaching staff and adheres to head coach directions.
• Organizes strategies for teaching sports skills and managing practices.
• Supervises participants, manages equipment, and ensures safety during games and practices.
• Follows league, conference, WVSSAC policies and end-of-season procedures.

Evaluation

Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/athletic director/principal's designee and in accordance with WV State Board Policy 5310, and UCBOE Policy 5010

Job Summary

The person employed for this position must be able to teach the fundamentals of the sport and instill good sportsmanship behaviors in the participants. Additionally, adherence to WVSSAC rules and regulations as well as school and district policies is required.

Performance Responsibilities

Professional and Interpersonal Relations

Communicates with educational personnel, parents, students, and others. Items that may be used to reflect professional and interpersonal relations:

• Cooperates with building principal.
• Cooperates with athletic director.
• Develops rapport with coaching staff within the school.
• Adheres to the directives of the head coach.
• Develops positive relationship with participants, student body, faculty, parents and community, game officials, news media, and opponents.
• Employs appropriate conduct during games and practices.
• Attends league, conference and WVSSAC meetings.
• Participate in activities that foster professional growth and development.
• Motivates staff and players toward desired goals.
• Commands respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior and language.
• Ensures compliance to all school and county related policies and practices.
• Other duties as assigned by the principal and/or principal's designee.

Coaching and Related Areas

Organizes strategies for teaching sports skills and sports management systems. Items that may be used to reflect coaching and related areas:

• Develops high caliber and quality instruction.
• Handles athletic injuries.
• Cares for equipment.
• Supervises participants and disciplines team appropriately.
• Designs quality organization of practice sessions.
• Designs pre-season planning.
• Supervises managers and other support personnel.
• Follows purchasing procedures.
• Follows league, conference, and WVSSAC policies.
• Devotes time and energy to coaching duties.
• Follows end of season procedures.
• Other duties/responsibilities assigned by the principal/athletic director.

Qualifications

Valid West Virginia teaching certificate licensing; or, WVDE teaching permit or substitute permit; or, high school diploma or GED.

Coaches that are not professional teachers are required to complete the WVSSAC Training and Certification Program.
