Job description

About us

Worley is a global company of energy, chemicals and resources experts headquartered in Australia. We partner with our customers to deliver projects and create value across the life of their assets. We specialize in consulting, engineering, procurement and construction across the project lifecycle, with services extending through to operations and decommissioning. Leveraging extensive experience and AI-enabled delivery, we support customers in navigating complexity as they meet today's needs and transition to more sustainable solutions.

Purpose of the role

As a Buyer, you will be responsible for purchasing materials and equipment on a competitive basis in line with project specifications, business requirements, and established procurement practices. You will identify, evaluate, and select reliable sources of supply for materials, equipment, and services, ensuring that purchasing activities support project objectives and meet Worley's and our customers' expectations.

Working with a high degree of independence, you will manage purchasing assignments from supplier identification through commercial evaluation and order placement, using your experience and judgment to resolve challenges, recommend solutions, and keep procurement activities on track. You will also contribute to a collaborative working environment by sharing technical guidance, supporting colleagues, and helping maintain consistent, effective procurement practices.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage purchasing activities: Execute purchasing activities for engineered and non-engineered materials, equipment, and services in accordance with project requirements, approved procedures, and Company policies.
  • Identify and evaluate suppliers: Research the supply market, identify potential sources of supply, solicit quotations, and assess supplier capability, reliability, commercial competitiveness, and ability to meet project requirements.
  • Conduct competitive procurement: Review and compare supplier quotations, evaluate pricing and commercial terms, identify potential risks, and recommend purchasing decisions that deliver value while balancing cost, quality, delivery, and technical requirements.
  • Support project execution: Coordinate purchasing priorities with project teams and relevant stakeholders to help ensure materials and equipment are available when required and procurement activities align with project schedules.
  • Review purchasing requirements: Interpret purchase requisitions, specifications, scopes of supply, and other relevant documentation to confirm that purchasing activities reflect project needs and applicable requirements.
  • Manage supplier communications: Maintain professional working relationships with suppliers, clarify commercial and delivery requirements, follow up on quotations and commitments, and address purchasing issues promptly and constructively.
  • Resolve procurement challenges: Identify discrepancies, delivery concerns, supply constraints, and other issues that may affect purchasing outcomes. Evaluate available options, recommend practical solutions, and elevate significant risks when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate procurement records: Ensure purchasing documentation, supplier quotations, commercial evaluations, purchase orders, and relevant correspondence are complete, accurate, and maintained in accordance with established processes.
  • Apply procurement systems and procedures: Use relevant purchasing systems, tools, and workflows effectively, troubleshoot routine issues, and support consistent application of procurement processes across assignments.
  • Collaborate across disciplines: Work closely with project management, engineering, materials management, expediting, quality, and other relevant functions to coordinate requirements, resolve issues, and support effective project delivery.
  • Promote responsible procurement: Consider quality, reliability, commercial risk, and sustainability-related requirements when evaluating purchasing options, in line with applicable Company policies and project objectives.
  • Support continuous improvement: Identify opportunities to improve purchasing efficiency, strengthen supplier performance, reduce avoidable costs, and share practical insights that support better procurement outcomes.
  • Provide technical guidance: Where appropriate, support less experienced colleagues by sharing purchasing knowledge, clarifying procedures, and providing guidance on common procurement activities.

What you'll bring to the role

You will bring a strong foundation in purchasing or procurement, sound commercial judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail. You will be comfortable working independently on a range of purchasing assignments, collaborating with different stakeholders, and taking a practical, solutions-focused approach to challenges.

Qualifications and experience

  • A university degree in procurement, supply chain management, business, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Typically, five or more years of relevant purchasing or procurement experience, with a demonstrated ability to manage purchasing activities across a range of materials, equipment, or services.
  • Experience identifying suppliers, requesting and evaluating quotations, comparing commercial offers, negotiating terms, and supporting purchasing decisions.
  • Familiarity with engineered and non-engineered items and the ability to interpret purchasing requirements, technical specifications, and supporting documentation.
  • Experience working with established procurement policies, procedures, systems, and controls in a project-driven or operational environment.
  • An understanding of supplier evaluation, commercial risk, delivery requirements, and the factors that influence effective procurement decisions.

Technical and commercial skills

  • Procurement expertise: A solid understanding of purchasing principles, sourcing practices, quotation management, commercial evaluation, and purchase order administration.
  • Commercial awareness: The ability to assess pricing, payment terms, delivery commitments, contractual conditions, and other commercial considerations to identify competitive and practical purchasing solutions.
  • Supplier management: The ability to identify dependable suppliers, assess their suitability, maintain productive working relationships, and address performance or delivery concerns.
  • Analytical thinking: The ability to review information, compare alternatives, recognize inconsistencies, assess risks, and make well-reasoned recommendations based on available evidence.
  • Systems and digital capability: Strong working knowledge of procurement systems, business applications, and relevant tools. You will be able to navigate established workflows, maintain accurate data, and assist with troubleshooting routine system or process issues.
  • Planning and prioritization: The ability to organize your workload, manage competing demands, monitor purchasing progress, and adapt to changing project priorities without losing sight of critical deadlines.
  • Quality and compliance: A disciplined approach to documentation, accuracy, procedural compliance, and the application of relevant purchasing requirements and internal controls.
  • Continuous improvement: The ability to recognize inefficiencies, suggest improvements, and apply lessons learned to strengthen procurement performance.

How you work

  • Independent and accountable: You will plan and manage your assignments with minimal day-to-day supervision, take ownership of deliverables, and seek technical guidance when an assignment presents unfamiliar or exceptional challenges.
  • Pragmatic and solutions-focused: You will approach problems objectively, assess options, and recommend workable solutions that reflect commercial realities and project priorities.
  • Collaborative and inclusive: You will work effectively with colleagues across functions and locations, value different perspectives, and contribute to a culture where people share knowledge and work toward common goals.
  • Clear and confident communicator: You will communicate purchasing requirements, commercial findings, recommendations, and potential risks clearly in written and verbal discussions. You will also continue to develop your ability to influence stakeholders and contribute to proposals, presentations, and reports.
  • Organized and detail-oriented: You will maintain reliable records, manage multiple purchasing activities, and ensure that important commercial and technical details receive appropriate attention.
  • Adaptable and committed to learning: You will respond constructively to changing priorities, build your understanding of procurement systems and practices, and remain open to new approaches that improve the way work gets done.
  • Supportive of others: You will share knowledge and, where required, provide practical guidance to colleagues working on common projects, helping the wider team deliver consistent results.
