Job summary

Valco Melton is seeking a Buyer to join the Purchasing group at our world headquarters in Cincinnati. The Buyer will evaluate suppliers, issue and manage purchase orders, analyze cost and delivery performance, and proactively resolve supply-chain disruptions.

This role collaborates with Engineering and Manufacturing to ensure materials are available and cost-effective. Applicants should be organized, self-driven, and able to self-manage, with 3–5 years’ purchasing experience in manufacturing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, supply chain, engineering, or related field; professional certification preferred.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes and cost structures for machined, fabricated, and engineered components.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong analytical skills for cost evaluation and supplier performance assessment.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing requirements.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration to negotiate with suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Manage sourcing and procurement for engineered and commercial components (machined parts, electrical components, castings, sheet metal, injection-molded parts).
  • Evaluate, select, and develop suppliers; make sourcing decisions based on cost, quality, delivery, and fit.
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery; analyze quotes and cost drivers to achieve best-value sourcing.
  • Oversee purchase orders and supplier performance; ensure adherence to commitments and supply continuity.
  • Serve as primary supplier contact; resolve delivery, quality, and invoicing issues; mitigate disruptions.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations to support lifecycle needs and drive continuous improvement.

Job description

Valco Melton is now seeking a Buyer to join the Purchasing group at our world headquarters in Cincinnati.

The Buyer is responsible for evaluating suppliers, issuing and managing purchase orders, analyzing cost and delivery performance, and proactively resolving supply‑chain disruptions. This position regularly collaborates with Engineering and Manufacturing to ensure materials and components are available, cost‑effective, and aligned with production and business objectives.

Applicants for this position must possess the agility and negotiating acumen to create options and quickly implement them in order to alleviate the effects of unexpected changes. In addition, this role requires someone who is organized, self-driven, and able to self-manage.

This role will work 100% from the Valco Melton headquarters in Cincinnati, with minimal travel required on occasion.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Manage sourcing and procurement for engineered and commercial components, including machined parts, electrical components, castings, sheet metal, injection‑molded parts, and related materials.
  • Evaluate, select, and develop suppliers, and make or recommend sourcing decisions based on cost, quality, delivery, and long‑term fit.
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery commitments, and analyze quotes and cost drivers to achieve cost control and best‑value sourcing.
  • Oversee purchase orders and supplier performance, ensuring adherence to commitments and continuity of supply.
  • Serve as the primary supplier contact, exercising independent judgment to resolve delivery, quality, and invoicing issues and mitigate supply disruptions.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations to support product lifecycle needs, interpret technical requirements, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills / Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or a related technical or business discipline (or ISM, APICS, or similar professional certification).
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and cost structures associated with machined, fabricated, and engineered components.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and related documentation.
  • Strong analytical skills, including quote analysis, cost evaluation, and supplier performance assessment.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise independent judgment, and respond effectively to changing business requirements.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to negotiate and maintain strong relationships with external suppliers.
Preferred Skills / Experience:
  • 3 - 5 years’ experience in a purchasing role in a manufacturing environment.
  • Prior experience with the metal fabrication/machining industry.
  • ISM, APICS, or similar professional certification.
  • Experience with AS400 or similar ERP systems.
