Job summary
University of California, San Francisco CVRI IT team is seeking an IT Specialist to provide workstation and server support for approximately 400 faculty and staff across PC and Mac environments. You will handle installation, maintenance, and network connectivity to the campus network and to the hospital information system (APEX).
The role also covers server support, backup systems, and management of remote access tools, with emphasis on security and reliable service delivery.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training
- Minimum 1 year of related experience
- Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge of Macintosh and PC hardware, servers, peripherals and software
- Proven ability to install, configure and upgrade desktop systems
- Knowledge of wide area and local networks and the ability to troubleshoot problems and coordinate
- Ability to set up and install programs
- Ability to diagnose problems and determine if they are hardware, software or network and coordinate solutions
- Excellent communication skills and ability to instruct/train users

The primary mission of the CVRI, the largest organized research unit on the San Francisco campus is to promote fundamental and clinical research on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and to provide opportunities for postdoctoral training in these fields with over 400 faculty staff and fellows the CVRI Is comprised of faculty from a variety of departments (Pulmonary Medicine, Biochemistry and Biophysics, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, Medicine, Pediatrics, Anatomy, Physiology, Cardiology and Lung Biology).
The position offers technical support to approximately 400 faculty and staff who use PC and Macintosh computers. The primary functions of this position are Workstation installation and maintenance. Application Server installation and maintenance, maintaining functional integrity of the LAN and connections with the campus network, hardware and software installations and maintenance, troubleshooting set up, upgrading and configuration of computers, managing Active Directory accounts, and supporting connections to the hospital information system (APEX)
The position also supports and backs up Windows and Unix Based servers. Manage Screen connect remote software.

- Macintosh and PC Hardware (40%)
- Set up install and configure new and transferred PC and Macintosh computers and peripherals as well as laptops hardware installations for a variety of Macs including internal battery memory cache RAM and ethernet cards
- Install maintain and troubleshoot networked Macintosh and PC hardware and software including ethernet and Airport IEEE 802 11 wireless connections and configuring
- Diagnose hardware repair needs schedule and coordinate repairs with vendors to resolve problems
- Maintain current equipment and software license inventory and network documentation
- Ensure hardware and software meets all UCSF security Requirements
- Software (25%)
- Install PC & Macintosh operating system including upgrades and re-installations as needed
- Install and configure applications software Filemaker Pro Office 2008 and 2010 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) Eudora & Now up to date Sophos and Symantec virus checking programs retrospect clients
- Install and verify UCSF's Security suite for all users computers.
- Install software for campus online systems (OLPPS STOR)
- Install printer drivers
- Network Support (10%)
- Assist in local and wide area networking functions. Diagnose and resolve problems
- Submit work request and coordinate with Enterprise Network
- Trouble shoot and maintain VPN software
- Report network and server problems to ENS and the Medical Center IT support and help resolve issues
- Attend daily CVRI IT meetings
- Server Support (25%)
- Configure and maintain servers for back up (Retrospect) databases File sharing servers. Application servers
- Bigfix iinsallation. Bigfix console management
