The successful candidate will primarily focus on laser and radiation safety by conducting laboratory inspections, reviewing research and development experiments, and evaluating equipment purchases. This position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams in both research and product development to ensure a safe working environment and maintain compliance with established safety programs.Key Responsibilities* Audit laboratories to ensure compliance with radiation and laser safety standards.* Analyze potential safety hazards and assist in developing requirement specifications for hardware containing hazardous elements.* Understand and implement laser and optical safety standards, including FLPPS, ANSI Z136.1, IEC 60825, and IEC 62471.* Create, review, and approve standard operating procedures related to laser and optical hazards.* Review and authorize work performed by external service technicians.* Conduct power, spectral, and temporal measurements for laser and LED sources.* Implement required safety protocols for radiation sources and perform leakage surveys.* Collaborate with staff to establish procedures that align with safety program requirements.* Provide cross-functional support for additional environmental health and safety programs, including lock-out/tag-out, chemical safety, and machine guarding.Required Qualifications**Education:** A Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optical Sciences, Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or a related scientific discipline is required. Direct experience in a safety officer role may be considered in lieu of a degree.**Experience:** At least five years of experience as a laser safety officer is required, along with a background in safety investigations during the development process or failure analysis.**Technical Skills:** Proficiency with ANSI Z136.1 standards and familiarity with multiple radiation sources, including x-ray generating machines, lasers, and LEDs, is required.
